Hertfordshire / Re: Local Knowledge Needed - Shenley Hospital
« on: Sunday 03 February 08 20:51 GMT (UK)  »
I have just noticed your enquiry re: Shenley Hospital.  The hospital was actually in the village of Shenley not Elstree as you have written.  There is also a churchyard in Radlett in which some people from Shenley have been buried.  I do have a book on who is buried in Radlett Churchyard and can look up for you if need be.  The other place that you could try is West Herts Crematorium in Garston, Watford which is not to far from Shenley.  Where I work at the moment have got nurses that used to work in Shenley and when I go back to work from sick leave I could ask them if need be.  I hope that this could be of some help to you.

The Lighter Side / Re: What was the saddest death in your Tree ?

Although it was only 28 years ago it was my grandad's.  He went into hospital for an operation but they gave him the wrong blood type and he never survivied.  But the last three years have been the worst.  I have lost my twin brother three years ago and then last year in July I lost my mum, then in November my brother-in-law's mum and then two weeks later in December my dad and the very next day my mums aunt, my great auntie!  To be quite honest the saddest one was my dad as he was still working and coping after losing mum, it came as such a shock

The Lighter Side / Re: Twins - how many sets do you have?

I am a twin but sadly my twin brother passed away three years ago.  When we were younger both my parents said that there were no twins on either side of the family but when I started looking into my father's side of the tree I found that his father was from a second marriage and that there were twins on the great grandfather's side so it seems to have come down the paternal side! but also there are twins on my paternal grandmother's side as well!  I haven't got very far on my mum's side but I will carry on looking.
Reading through what has been said I can relate to the girl who was asked whether she and her brother were identical or not as I have been through the same thing, which was funny as my brother was a foot taller than me! Mind you I have to say that we felt each other's pain which was good when I had my two sons as Tim had the pain and I didn't!!!

Hertfordshire / Re: "Archers Farm" - Aldenham - Help Please.

Yes earlier census info would be greatly appreciated.  Where my father worked was opposite the pub.  He was a landscape gardenenr.  In fact he used to have half a bitter shandy on Friday lunchtimes!!  In fact I live in Radlett and it only takes me 15 minutes to walk from my house to Round Bush and when I was younger it was my local as it was walkable.

Hi Rick
Thank you very much for the information.  Round Bush is actually a hamlet just outside of Aldenham and the pub is still there!  They do very good food.  I think I need to go back a bit earlier.  I have got some of the information already but the extra comes in handy.  Wheathampstead is only about a twenty minute drive from Radlett where I live.
My father actually worked for a firm based in Round Bush until he died last December so it is a coincidence that his family used to live in that area.

Hi Carol

The family name is Rumney.  I know that they were in Aldenham and surrounding areas in the 1840's onwards.  I am not sure about earlier because I need to go to where the parish registers are kept.

Many thanks

Kay

Hertfordshire / "Archers Farm" - Aldenham - Help Please.
« on: Thursday 12 July 07 22:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi can anybody help me please in finding out whether there was a farm called Archers in Aldenham.  I ordered my great grandfather's birth certificate and it says that he was born in 1859 at Archer's Farm, Aldenham.  I have tried looking on google, looking at old maps and even asking people who have lived in Aldenham all their lives if anybody has actually heard of the place but I cannot find it anywhere.  If anybody has any suggestions on where I could look next it would be gratefully received.
Many thanks in advance.

The Lighter Side / Re: Family interest .....
« on: Wednesday 04 July 07 00:06 BST (UK)  »
I have a two nieces, one of fifteen and one of 10.  They are both interested the younger one more so as last year they lost Nanny, Grandad and Grandma in the space of five months and also three years ago their Uncle, my twin.  After Mum died Dad found some certificates etc and I said about finding out more as Dad didn't know how his family worked.  Just before he died last December I had managed to find out how some of his cousins worked in the family and about when his sister died at 3 months old.  I didn't do alot after Dad died but then my youngest niece said to me if I help you can we do the tree in memory of Nanny and Grandad so I have carried on and every time she comes over she adds a bit more to her book.  When I went to FRC last week I bought her a chart to put on her bedroom wall so she can see how it pans out.  I have decided to make up files for my sister, brother and two sons to keep so they can add to it in the future, although my sons have said they have no interest they do ask every so often if I have found out anymore!!
