Shropshire Lookup Requests / Re: Shifnal Marriage for Glover to Bird
« on: Thursday 21 July 11 12:05 BST (UK)  »
I have carried out all my research for Rebecca on the Internet.  I know the IGI is pretty thorough with its info although I know some info is missing.  I've tried everything to find Rebecca which has made me think she might have been married to a Bird.

I have found a Rebecca Onions married to Henry Bird in Wellington on 22 April 1793.  There is also a child, Mary, baptised in 1794 in Wellington.  Was Henry much older and was he from Shifnal?  I cannot find a baptism for Henry in Wellington but there is one in Shifnal in 1753!  There is a baptism for Rebecca Onians in Wellington in 1774.

This is just a theory, but there are Onions and Bird(s) in Shifnal so there could be a link between the families in Wellington and Shifnal, there is not a huge distance between them.  Rebecca is claiming to be born in Shifnal in the 1851 Census - maybe she was but then baptised in Wellington because of family links there.  (My son was born in Hertfordshire but baptised in Yorkshire where my parents live!)

So, I'm wondering if it would state she was a widow or spinster at the marriage to William Glover in 1796 at Shifnal?  Is there a death for Henry Bird between 1793-96 at Wellington or Shifnal?

Shropshire Lookup Requests / Shifnal Marriage for Glover to Bird

Hi

I'm wondering if anyone can help me find a marriage?

My husband's GGG Grandfather, William Glover (b 1773 Broseley) married Rebecca Bird at Shifnal (Shropshire) on 4 Jan 1796.  As I am unable to find a baptism for Rebecca Bird (b 1777 Shifnal) I am wondering if she was a widow when she married William and finding the marriage may help.

I would very much appriciate any help.

Hi again, Rose

The 1841 Census shows that George was not born in Yorkshire and that Christiana was.  I just think that it is odd that he was not born in Yorkshire if he was a 'Fulwood Hall' Fox.

If George was the son of Benjamin Fox, Benjamin was born in 1751 and there is a baptism for Benjamin in 1751 in Hathersage.  This makes it more likely that George was more likely to belong to the Fox family of Derbyshire!  I could be completely wrong it's the fact that the Census has 'N' to being born in the County that has made me doubt that he was a Fulwood Hall Fox.

I still think they were all related in some way but it's working out how.

I am Janet G on Genes.  I am a descendent of George's son Joseph, his daughter Frances married Charles Swallow then it's William Swallow followed by Harry Swallow (who helped with More of Mayfield Valley), then Betty Swallow who married Bruce Walker and I am Janet their daughter.

If only George had lived until 1851!

Thanks, Rose

This helps to build the bigger picture.

Where are you?  Are you in Sheffield?

Rose

I'm no longer signed up to Genes or Ancestry.

Here's what George's Will says

FOX George  Effects Under £50  12 June   Administration (with the Will) of the effects of George Fox late of Fulwood in the Parish of Sheffield in the County of York Farmer who died 27 July 1848 at Fulwood was granted at Wakefield to Joseph Fox of Bradfield in the Parish of Ecclesfield in the said County Publican the Son one of the Residuary Legatees substituted.

Going back to Benjamin, I think the Fox family were all related and it is possible that Benjamin was farming land in Killamarsh which probably belonged to the Fox family.  There is mention of Killamarsh in the Bagshaw documents.

I discovered that Benjamin and Martha lived in the farm just 2 miles away from George and Christiana.

These are my notes about Benjamin (and Martha)

If Benjamin is the Dad I have found the baptisms for George (1778), Joseph (1779) and Martha (1788} in Killamarsh, Derbyshire.  I looked for more children, with the idea that Benjamin and Martha moved from Killamarsh to the Fulwood area.  I found Ann baptised 16 May 1785 Sheffield, Benjamin baptised 1 July 1787 Sheffield and another Benjamin baptised 4 March 1791 Old Church. Sheffield.

Burials
Ecclesall All Saints: Benjamin, farmer age 66 of Hallam on 26 Nov. 1817
Martha, widow age 64 of Hallam on 3 May 1823

What do you think?

Thanks Rose

I understand which Martha you mean now.

I know about all the info in the library and one day would like to see it but I'm still not sure George and Christiana are linked to Fulwood Hall.

I have researched all this background information you have given me but the reason for there being doubt that George b 1777 is the son of George of Bradfield is that the 1841 Census says he was born outside the County of Yorkshire.  This has always caused a doubt for me and even though I've looked at the Fulwood Hall link, I've not been sure about it.  This led me to look at the IGI site and the only baptism around 1777 is in Killamarsh, Derbyshire and the parents are Benjamin and Martha Fox.

To continue

I know about the book, my Grandad, Harry Swallow helped with some of the information.  He always believed that there were connections to Fulwood Hall and had built up a tree showing the link.  I think he could be wrong!  I haven't used his tree, I would like to find out for myself.

It's very confusing

Hi Rose

I'm not sure if we have had contact but it is very probable that we have!

George Fox, married to Christiana Hinchcliffe died in 1848 and I have an outline of the Will from Ancestry which I can forward to you if you send me your email address.

I'm not sure which George you have marrying in 1845, I would be very interested in seeing a copy of the marriage certificate you have.

I would love to be able to link George Fox to Fulwood Hall but I think his parents were Benjamin and Martha and I cannot work out who the father of Benjamin was.

I have been to Fulwood and looked for the graves of George and Christiana but I was unsuccessful.  (I live in Hertfordshire).  I occasionally go very near to the area and would like, one day, to find their graves.
