Sutherland / Caroline durness cemetries
« on: Thursday 14 June 07 19:41 BST (UK)  »
Caroline- can you look for a male Sutherland and female McKay possibly Angus and Barbara who were born about 1870's or 80's and died after 1812 and before 1830. They are husband and wife so are hopefully together. Let me know if this is too vague.
Thanks Emily

Sutherland / more info re: Durness Parish Register
« on: Thursday 14 June 07 19:19 BST (UK)  »
Thanks Andy- I have some additional info that I have gathered recently. I have a marriage certificate for Angus Sutherland and Barbara McKay for December 25, 1811 in Durness. There is no information as to whether they had children- they should have had Alexander probably prior to 1812 and John about 1813. Nor is there information about their death whereas my people would have died between 1812 and 1825.
I also have a John Thomas Sutherland born April 4, 1812 to Angus Sutherland (born about 1788) and Barbara MacKay with the word Laingo after it, but nothing on their parents.
There is also a family legend that John Sutherland was related a duke of Sutherland (there is a John Sutherland Earl of Sutherland 1734 can you trace his line?).
I have plotted the first name rule to get potential first names for the generations prior to John. Apparently John's parents died when he was a child and his maternal uncle Robert raised him in Nova Scotia (emigrated in the 20's) John's brother Alexander emigrated to South America. John's children's names are Thomas?(1st born did not survive?) Alexander, John, Hector, Hugh, Maggie, and Thomas (youngest). My husband's family is descended from John's son Alexander.
Does this help or confuse things? I know I am getting dizzier and dizzier working on this.
Thanks again
Cheers, Emily

Scotland / Just found a Licia baptised in C.Sutherland 1777
« on: Tuesday 05 June 07 00:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi Migky-
I came across a MacKay on the Sutherland family forum with the first name Licia. My sister's name is Licia and it is an Italian origin. It made me curious about Italian connections in county Sutherland in the 1700's.  Just thought that was interesting. I'll let you know if I come up with her maternal lineage names.

Oh Thanks Ian for your response. It really does look like Barbara and Angus could be the next generation up. I think I have seen the alias too now to find it again.
Thanks so much.

I am curious about Licia McKay baptised 1777. My sister's name is Licia (Italian origin) and I am wondering if there is also a Gaelic diriviative or there is a Italian connection in Durness in 1700's. do you have any more information about her?

Sutherland / Marion McKenzie circa mid to late 1700's
« on: Monday 04 June 07 20:38 BST (UK)  »
What I know of Marion is that she married Alexander McKay who had a brother William. Marion and Alexander had 7 children: Rachel, William Andrew, James, thomas, Mary, Hector, and Alexander. These children were likely born late 1700's near Durness.

Sutherland / Re:Elizabeth in Sutherland 1841

Hey Joe- Do you have any evidence that the Elizabeth McKay in Sutherland was the sister of Robert, Alexander and another girl all most likely born just before the turn of the century 1800. The unknown sister married a Sutherland around early 1800's. This was all probably in or around Durness and may have been peasant families on the Duke's estate.
