Perthshire / Re: Muthill, Perthshire.
« on: Thursday 17 September 20 15:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi, have been searching for the birth of my 3 x great grandfather, John Gardner or Gardiner. He appears in the 1841, 1851, 1861 and 1871 census in Fintry and always gives his place of birth as Muthill. On his death certificate (1875) it says the same. His father is listed as William and his mother as Mary Drummond. I found a William Gardiner, farmer of Craigneith, and downloaded his will from Scotlands People. No mention at all of John, maybe he was disinherited  :( John was a labourer all his life, while William Gardiner seems to have been a reasonably successful farmer, which makes me think I am going in the wrong direction there. John was born in 1799 / 1800. He married Agness Barr and their children were Janet 1847, Margaret 1849, Anges 1851, William 1854, David 1857 and James 1860. Thanks very much in advance for any help! Europe / Re: Reading German Parish Register
« on: Tuesday 16 August 11 07:24 BST (UK)  »
After a couple of years work I have finally solved the mystery. The baptism was our ancester Michael Auer and he did come from Gutenberg. His mother Margarethe Auer was not married which is why he has the same surname as her. Her father is listed on the baptism, not the father of Michael. She then married and had more children.  I managed to solve the puzzle because one of the children from her marriage to Andreas Schoepfe  was godfather to 'our ' Michael Auer's daughter in London. I have his record from the Gutenberg parish book. I have been able to decipher some of it but not all. I would love some help in this if possible. I am hoping that other brothers or sisters came to London too so I can research them more.
The second question is how to find these parish records? The one for Schoepfe was sent to me by somebody researching a distant relative. Do you have to go to the Wurttemberg records in Stuttgart? I am thinking that Johan Georg Auer, father of Margarethe would have had a similar page? Did everybody have their own page?
Thanks in advance!

Thanks so much for the reply! Is there any way of seeing this marriage contract without actually going to Stuttgart? i have now researched his half brother and his life in London. Unfortunately there don't seem to be any heirs, despite the fact that Andreas had 5 children and died at a good age in London. We just came back from Germany so not much chance of going back there for a while. Do you know of any research companies who might be able to work on this for us?
It has taken me four years to find out where Michael Auer came from in Germany and now we are very excited to find out the rest.
Best wishes

Europe / Illegitimate Births in Germany in the 19th century
« on: Friday 12 August 11 20:54 BST (UK)  »
I have been searching for my husband's family in Germany and think I  may have found his ggg grandmother. On the batptism record only her name appears and I cannot find a father's name. The child has her surname - Auer. A year later she married but her son, Michael Auer, used her surname all his life. Can I presume that he was illegitimate and that the man she married a year later, and had 8 children with, was not his father?
Thanks!
Aylene

Michael Auer born in Gutenberg in 1830
Mother Margarethe Auer born in Gutenberg in 1803 died 1842
Stepfather Andreas Schopf married Margarethe Auer in 1832 in Gutenberg
Andreas Schopf born in Gutenberg in 1839 to Andreas and Margarethe was godfather to Michael Auer's daughter Charlotte in London in 1872

Thanks for all that. I was in touch today with somebody through Genes Reunited who had the same William Calder married to Margaret Lind. I am very confused about all of this now.
The first entry from Cathlaw, does that mean the daughter died?
I have Mary Inglis's death too but I cannot find William's death anywhere.
You have resolved a problem for me -Mary Scott Aitken was Peter Aitken and Mary Calder's daughter. She is transcribed as Mary Scott Arthur on Ancestry and since Arthur is a common name in Torphichen I have been searching for an Arthur. Now I see that she was the my GG grandmother's Marion Aitken's older sister. It does make sense that she would be called after her grandmother so now i have hope that the William Calder 1792 is mine. What info do you have on John Calder? I have been trying to find William's brothers and sisters. I have been looking also for marriages of the Calder Ingles marriage brothers and sisters. I believe that Alexander Calder did not marry. My GG grandmother Marion Aitken was the housekeeper for her Uncle Alexander Calder in the 1891 census and my grandmother (her illegitimate daughter) was living with him too. I just started researching this side of the family last week but am totally fascinated by it. The Aitkens of Torphichen have been well researched but this side has not been looked ta so far. Thanks very much for your help. Aylene

My GGGG Grandfather lived in Torphichen, although I believe he was born in West Calder. His parents are listed as William Calder and Mary Scot.
My GGGG grandfather was William Calder and was born around 1792 so his mother would be 1775 or before. i will be investigating this family now and will let you know if I find anything

I am looking for William Calder who was my GGGG Grandfather. I know he was born around 1792 in West Calder. He married a Mary Ingles and had 6 children William, Alexander, John, Jean, Mary (my ggg grandmother) and Robert. He is living in Torphichen for the  1841 and 1851 census and Mary is a widow by 1861. Robert was married in 1857 and his father is not listed as deceased.  A William Calder died in Torphichen in 1858 but it was not the right one...My William Calder was a Blacksmith and was married.
I have searched all the records and websites but cannot find any trace of his death which I presume must have happened between 1857 and 1861 but may also have been before 1857 if the marriage certificate information was not correct. I would be grateful if anybody has any information from the Monumental Inscriptions.
Thanks very much

Warwickshire / Re: Lee family of Henley in Arden / Wootton Wawen

Thanks for looking! I am quite new to this kind of research and am based in Italy which makes it harder to do the research. There is another person resarching this family who i could ask to look in Worcester. Certainly Lee is a very common name but as far as I know Henley in Arden was a small parish. I was surprised not to find Harrall, even searching on the net. I did find some in Rugby and Coventry though.
It would be very frustrating to stop at 1800! Aylene

I found online that the following are missing 1701-1764. I would be interested in births from 1700 to 1800.How would I be able to see the Bishops Transcripts?
Thanks very much for the fast reply!
