Hi JJ,
Thanks so much for taking a look for me, it's much appreciated.

I'm not really sure which other locations to try.  I've traced my Lawrence family living in Merriott from around 1851 back to 1732 when John & Prudence had their first child called William. According to the Merriott families genealogy website there isn't any John and Prudence that got married around 1731 so i thought that maybe they were married in Crewkerne but you've proved otherwise so maybe they were married in another area close by to Merriott?
I've just had a look at google map and there's East Chinnok and West Chinnok, Haselbury Plucknett, Norton Sub Hamdon, Hinton St George, Lopen, Misterton, Odcombe.
I can't really see them being married further away or outside of Somerset

I've tried looking for their marriage on the IGI but no luck.

Somerset / Crewkerne 18th century marriage - LAWRENCE
« on: Friday 27 August 10 13:55 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I'm hoping someone may have access to the parish registers of Crewkerne around 1731-ish.
I've been onto the Crewkerne opc site but the registers from the 18th century haven't yet been transcribed.

I am looking for the marrige of John Lawrence and a Prudence around 1731(Not sure of Prudence's surname but i'm guessing it is also Lawrence).
They had their first child(William) in Merriott in 1732.
I've had a look on the Merriott Families genealogy website but can't find a marriage between John Lawrence and a Prudence that fits so i'm starting to broaden my search.

Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you in advance

Europe / Re: Where does my French ancestor come from?

Thanks for giving me the link to the Calvados records. i will try and register to get a subscription.

It looks like you've cracked it. I'm 99.9999% sure you have!

I think the Foulkes family you've found in the 1861 census is definately David'parents. Maybe the Elizabeth is either one of David's brother's daughters or she could be David's daughter making her Caroline's sister. I will have to check this out.

The Caroline Foulkes you've found living with the Hughes family is definately the same Caroline. I've had a look in freebmd and found David's first marriage to Elisabeth and her maiden name is Hughes! Not sure why it says Liverpool as her birth but i guess her uncle wasn't sure.

Thanks again for checking the consular records. Hopefully i'll be able to find something in the Calvados records.

A very big thank you for helping me because i'm pretty sure i would have never found the info you have in a million years.

Thank you again for such an informative reply .

Caroline gave her mark and not sign her name on the marriage certificate(again, what does this tell you?).
From what you've explained, the evidence so far points to her being born in France, but to a British Father.

You may have stumbled on something with the name Faulkes!
I have my Gt Grandfather's birth certificate(born 1887) and it has Caroline(his mother) down as Caroline Nye formerly Foulkes!

There is a lot of info that you have given me that i need to digest.
It will be interesting to see if you can find a Caroline Faulkes in the Consular records, but if you can't, does it mean that we're 'barking up the wrong tree'?

Thanks soooo much again for your help, it really is appreciated.

Thanks so much for looking at the consular birth/death indexes, it really is appreciated.

On the marriage cert it says they were married in the Parish Church (what does this tell you?)

I'm afraid i've not been able to find William or his brother in the 1871 census(it's as though they've disappeared off the planet!). Maybe William was away over in France?

Thanks for replying and explaining how it works.

If there is no evidence of exactly where she was born in France, do you have any tips on how i go about finding this out as i'm at a complete loss.

Europe / Can someone look up the Consular birth registers please

Hi,
I'm trying to find out where my Gt Gt Grandmother was born in France and have been told to have a look in the Consular birth registers but i don't have access so was hoping someone will have access to them and be able to look for me to see if she's there.

The only info i have on her is her marriage cert and the 1881 census(looked for others and can't find them)

She was married in 1872 to William Nye(mariner) in Durham aged 18. Her father was called David Faux(an Engine Driver)

On the 1881 census, she is living in Durham with 3 of her children. Her husband isn't there, he's on a boat. She is down as a  'Sailor's Wife' and it says she was born in France (british Subject)

Hope someone can help and thanks in advance.

The witnesses on the marriage cert are:

John Nye - he was the brother of William Nye
Eliza Middleton - i don't know who this person is

Thanks for checking the 1871 census and it looks like you are right about them not living there very long.

That's interesting about the Mary Ann Faux you've found - i will have to investigate.

Heer are the children that Caroline had between 1881 and her death in 1900(as far as i know):

John Henry Nye 1881 Sunderland
Florence Nye 1885 Sunderland
Arthur James Nye 1887 South Shields
Albert Edward Nye 1892 South Shields
