Thank you. What about his service? Would there be a record of his wounding whether it was in action or an accident?

Rutland / Barrowden marriage help please
« on: Thursday 14 August 25 21:41 BST (UK)  »
I've just spent nearly an hour trawling images on FindMyPast and Ancestry trying to find a marriage. I've got the details but looking for the actual image number on either Ancestry or FindMyPast to view.

Henry Stevenson and Joanna Elsham had banns called at Barrowden and at Hallaton, Leicestershire on the 8th/15th and 22nd of June 1755. I can find both images of the banns but cant see the actual marriage entry which Familysearch is quoting as 29th June 1755. Can somebody tell me the image number please as my eyes are going goggly. Not sure where they're getting 29th June from!

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much. Will there be any other military record available? I understand not everything is online and might have to go to Kew. Would a record of his joining be available?

Many thanks,
David.

I've found a record for my ancestor William Stevenson and wondering what the document actually is. The record is part of a collection for admissions into the Royal Hospital, Chelsea. Admission date is 2 Mar 1791. Aged 41. Theres also a discharge paper I found for 14th Feb 1795 which also says aged 41. Is anyone familiar with military records like these?

Thank you.

Northamptonshire / Long standing brick wall about to come down?
« on: Monday 11 August 25 19:55 BST (UK)  »
Good evening everyone.

Please excuse some of this message as it straddles the Northamptonshire and Leicestershire border! As some of you may know, I've been trying to find a baptism or any other detail of my 4th Great Grandfather for over 20 years now, and many of you have helped with this search to no avail.

William Stevenson in all parish records and census up until his death in 1861 states he was from Weston (Weston-by-Welland), Northamptonshire. Supposedly born around 1790, but no baptism exists, including the myriad of Non-Conformist chapels that surround the local area. I felt the disappointment that after exhausting all avenues, and spending many weeks of totalled research hours in both Northamptons and Leicesters record offices I assumed it was a lost cause. Although not giving up with it, I put it on the back burner hoping that one day a new record would be unearthed that could crack this case.

Since then, the reason I took on my family history, was for dad. He began this vast work in the days long before internet, and pulling records up in seconds after pressing a few keys. Many letters were sent to Somerset House and various church across the country in his years of research. Seeing dad struggling with illness later in life, I decided to take the reins and hoped to find what he could not! Anything about William Stevenson. Dad passed away in 2020 after a long battle with dementia, and had long forgotten who his close family were never mind ancestors. I made a promise to dad that I would unearth this mystery in the end, and possibly now I might be close.

As the surname isn't really found in the parish, I assumed the family came from elsewhere and relocated to Weston at some point, if Williams earliest memories are of Weston then he'd assume he was from there. The only other baptism at Weston was in 1779, Hannah. She was the daughter of William and Mary. William and Mary King were married at Great Easton, Leicestershire in December 1778 which is 4 and a half miles away.

There are no more children to this couple, except for a birth on 22 Dec 1796 in Weston, another Hannah. This Hannah was baptised at the Ashley and Wilbarston Chapel on 23 Feb 1798. The previous Hannah from 1779 was buried at Hallaton, Leicestershire in 1791. Hence the re-using of name!

No other children between 1779 and 1796. 17 years. After a while I wondered if he had joined the army, and found my possible clue!

Discharged from the 16th Dragoons (Light Lancers) in 1795 due to disability of the hand, a William Stevenson of "Allerton" which sounds like Hallaton verbally, and connects with first child Hannah being buried there. Being released from duty in 1795 and another child in 1796 makes a lot of sense! This William was also buried at Hallaton in 1813. The ages are very close for his baptism at Hallaton for 1758, son of John Stevenson.

So I've found a collection in the National Archives for the 16th Dragoons which had muster books and pay lists and hopefully something that will help covering the years 1776-1797. I've contacted them for help and waiting for a reply.

Hopefully this wall will come down soon. Sorry for the long post.

Thanks for reading,
David.

Thank you for your input. The more I look at it, the more I'm sure he was married twice. Really appreciated your help.

Thanks.

Yorkshire (North Riding) / William Stamper help please
« on: Sunday 23 March 25 20:29 GMT (UK)  »
Evening everyone.

My 5th Great Grandfather, William Stamper was married in 1779 to Ann Sandiman at Norton. And I've seen a lot of different trees (online and published) with a lot of variation. Trying to work out the facts is proving a bit more difficult than I thought. Wondering if someone who has a bit more knowledge of the area would be able to nudge me in the right direction.

The marriage is correct, but looking for Williams baptism gives a choice of 1748, in New Malton or 1767 at Norton. Although he could have been baptised later in life, it does seem a bit unlikely. If is was the first one in 1748, he would have been 31. His son John, my 4th Great Grandfather was baptised in 1780 at Norton. And it looks like John was the first child.

Other children seem to be:

Robert, 1785
Thomas, 1790
Thomas, 1792
Richard, 1794

Whats worrying me is, when Richard was born, William would have been at least 46. Not saying he was a late starter, but I thought he might have been married before. The banns book for 1779 just says "No impediment alledged". Also, does not give condition.

There is a marriage for 1765 at Norton for a William to Elizabeth Wilson, but this in so many trees is attributed to his father also called William.

Please can someone help me as its driving me around the bend.

Thank you.
David.
