thanks very much for all the help. I am now almost sure this is not my Isaac.. I have come across Isaac Gibson Parker before. My ancestor was born near Ribchester, lancashire, and lived at Chorlton on Medlock with wife Sarah. thanks again, and I will go check the records for myself to be certain.

Canada Lookup Request / Passenger lookup request
« on: Thursday 19 February 09 22:55 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help ? My grandad John Williams born 1913 emigrated from England to Canada with his parent Thomas Williams born 1890 and Louisa Williams ( Birtwistle)born 1890. They returned to England (Liverpool) in 1925 on the Montrose. They came from, and returned to, Rishton Lancashire
I am trying to find out when they left England  but my ancestry subscription doesn't give me access to those records, and it will be a while before I can use the free library access. I don't have a clue when they arrived in Canada but am presuming it would be after the war. Happy to help in return if I can. Thanks

Calderstones is still operating as an NHS hospital for people who have learning disabilities and as a secure unit for people held under mental health legislation. Only part of the grounds were sold and redeveloped.
It opened in 1915 and was used a military hospital (Queen Mary's) during the first world war, after which it became an Asylum. There were other institutions in the area, Brockhall hospital, now redeveloped and Langho Colony, now known as Kemple View hospital. Langho is very close to Whalley. There was also an asylum at what is now Mytton Fold Hotel and golf complex.
The records for Calderstones are held at Lancashire Records Office.
I would be wary of assuming that a death in Whalley would have been registered at Blackburn - more likely to have been registered in Clitheroe

Yes - I hope there is positive feedback from everyone, not just in the magazines. It would be a shame if it didn't happen again because it could grow into a great annual event.. And I agree about it to being geared to newcomers and beginners -  and there is nothing wrong with that. Family history is more accessible to everyone than it has ever been,so why not promote it.

I went yesterday - I managed to get Family History, Family Tree and History today, back issues, several of each with the free CD's. I travelled from Lancashire - it was a long day and I'm glad I did it, but if I had paid £20 I would have been disappointed. I think the ticket system for the workshops was badly organised, and I wish I had seen David Starkey and Nick Barrett rather than attending workshops. I didn't really learn anything from the workshops that I didn't already know. As I said, I'm glad I went but for me to go again next year it would have to be better organised and perhaps in a central location such as the NEC in Birmingham. Still, it's the first one of its kind and it can only get better.
