Warwickshire / Re: Hobbs family
« on: Tuesday 15 September 09 15:39 BST (UK)  »
Esther Buckingham who married John Miller has nothing to do with your Hobbs line, Viv. Esther died in 1846 and John Miller married her younger sister Sarah (the wife in the 1861 census).

I don't know who the Esther Buckingham was that married Thomas Hobbs but she's not the same one who married John Miller.

I'm descended from Esther's brother James Buckingham (who lived with the Millers in 1841). Sorry I didn't see your posts earlier or I could have jumped in then to save you pursuing a red herring!

Bingo, Jamjar! We are on the same family.

So as not to bore other listers, I will send further details to your message box and continue this exchange privately.

Thanks for your speedy response. See you again in "messages."

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Amelia SOLOMONS Aldgate 1841

Meliora - many thanks for your efforts! My access to the 1841 census is via ancestry.co.uk and we are all aware of some of its transcription/indexing shortcomings (some understandable, some less so) but no matter what search parameters I use, I too find several Amelia Solomons, but none with corroborating family members/ages. I have ploughed up and down Petticoat Square and cannot see the Solomons there ... though they must be nearby, as both Amelia and her mum were born in Aldgate and I cannot imagine an impoverished Jewish family moving too far from base at that time. They will have moved about over the years at the hands of landlords, expiring leases etc, but surely only within a relatively small area. Well, at least until Amelia married and with her husband and 3 children came to Australia, with the aid of the Jewish Emigration Society.
I do appreciate a second set of eyes on the search - chocolate enticements notwithstanding!!
Cheers

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Amelia SOLOMONS Aldgate 1841
« on: Monday 07 May 07 13:57 BST (UK)  »
Perhaps fresh eyes may find Amelia SOLOMONS on the 1841 census where mine have failed ....

All other evidence points to Amelia's birth in 1830/31 in Aldgate, Middlesex. She and mother Hannah are where they are supposed to be in 1851 - at 3 Petticoat Square (Amelia married from this address four years later). In 1851 Amelia is 20, a tailoress. Mother Hannah is 65, widowed, a pauper, also born Aldgate.

Amelia married at Great Synagogue, London, and GRO cert gives father as Joel Solomons, deceased. (London Great records give Joel's Hebrew/Synagogue name as Joseph, and Amelia's as Malkah).

I have searched under every version/spelling of Solomon(s) and Amelia (and Hannah) I can think of in 1841. Either the page is so faint it can't be accurately indexed, or ..... she must be there!! Am hoping father Joel is too ...  and maybe older siblings ... my only hope of getting further with this elusive Jewish family.

Your favourite chocolate biscuits by express delivery to first correct answer ... seriously, any thoughts gratefully received.

Hi Cass
I'm also descended from John Williams Cox and Charlotte, through son John. Where do you fit in? I do not yet have a confirmed death for Charlotte either, but have the family on the 1841 census just prior to emigration (you may have this by now yourself, as your posts are now a couple of years old).
There is another son, Henry, missing from the list Valda gave you.
Post again if you want to continue swapping notes.

Hi Jamjar and Kate

Do either of you have (approximate) age for Mary Ann Badier m John Bellet? I have good reason to believe she was the widow of Philippe Badier who died late 1860's in Jersey. Believe Mary Ann and (most of ) her kids emigrated to New Zealand after 1871 - some of the kids came on to Australia but it looks like Mary Ann was sidetracked by marriage in NZ!

Any further info either of you might have on Mary Ann I'd be eager to hear - and if she ties up with this Jersey family I have more info to share.

Hi Sue

Am coming into the lively Durell discussion a bit late but only just found it whilst Googling. A great relief to find someone on the trail of the same Durells as me. I belong to Sarah Hannah b 1818 (I believe she's my Sarah anyway).

Sarah Durell married James Buckingham 28 January 1838 at St Matthew Bethnal Green. Sarah's father Richard Durell, weaver. James's father David Buckingham, writer. James lived 7 Grosvenor Place BG; Sarah lived 4 Park St BG.

James and Sarah's first son James Edward Buckingham born 22 March 1838 at 7 Grosvenor Place BG. In 1841 census James and Sarah at 83 Wheler St BG with Mary Durell, 60, weaveress.  As you know, same census has Richard and Rebecca Durell with son Richard, plus James and John, at Grosvenor Place. No house number, but it's the seventh household from the beginning of the street on the form....

In 1851 census James and Sarah are at 53 Holywell Lane Shoreditch and with them is Mary Durell, widow, 67, weaver. You probably won't have found her in the index as "they" have indexed her as Mary Dyrell.

Given that my Sarah's father was Richard (marriage cert) and that Mary lived with Sarah till her death (1850's), and that Sarah is aged 32 in the 1851 census, I am as certain as I can be that she is Sarah Hannah Durell b 1818 to Richard and Mary, and thus sister to your Abbott. Also, James, John and Richard Durell (with Rebecca nee Bain) living at Grosvenor Place 3 years after my Sarah and James lived there, places them all neatly as your Abbott's siblings.

Only fly in the ointment is that Habbitt Durell's baptism shows "female" (can't remember where I saw this now but will look it up again later). This threw me for a while when I was also looking for your Abbott.

Sorry I didn't get into this earlier as I could have saved you all that faffing about with the other Richard Durells - there is a whole other branch getting in the way of ours at BG! Can fill you in on those if you like, but to be honest it's really good to be getting somewhere with MY Durells for a change (keep helping other people with THEIRS!)

There's more to say on all this but hope you're still out there ... how far have you gotten since those earlier postings c 2005?

Kim
