Durham Lookup Requests / Re: parish records Tanfield - Richardson

Hi Lorraine,
Yes, Arthur married twice. Hepzibah died in 1886 and Arthur then married Mary Ann Garbutt in 1887 and went on to have 3 further children with her. When it comes to Thomas b1903, there is not alot out there. I wasn't even sure he existed as Arthur and Hepzibah also had a son in 1906 and named him John Thomas (thought maybe they could be one and the same) but on the 1911 census they state that they had had 7 children, 5 of which were still living in 1911, so assume that Thomas 1903 is correct. That still leaves me 1 more child to find for the first marriage and then to work out which 2 of those 7 died before 1911. I stopped working on my Richardson tree for a while as I kept coming up against brick walls. Every generation of Richardsons gave their children the same names and there's nothing to distinguish them - so many Thomas', Arthurs, James, George, Josephs, Jonathans etc.! And every generation had more than 5 kids! I must have initially got the Thomas name and DOB details from somewhere though - I'll have to go back and revisit. I can only think it was on George's attestation papers, which I couldn't view earlier. Do you have an email address? Maybe I can invite you directly to view my tree as a guest via ancestry? When it comes to moving South - it happened. My own dad went from Newcastle, to London and then to Wales. Branches of the family also went to Canada and Australia. In fact it's your line that went to Australia I think - I'll need to check. Might even be your lot that went to Canada too.

Hi Lorraine,

Ok. So If I'm reading you correctly, your 3 x g grandfather would be Arthur William Richardson b1853, who married Hepzibah Kilbourn and then Mary Ann Garbut. Arthur and Hepzibah had a son George b1873 (sadly died in WW1 in 1918), but he did have a son Thomas b1903 with his wife Josephine Bell who would be your great grandfather. I haven't really done any digging further down than that in this family as it's not my direct line, but I do have bits of paper in files that I still haven't updated onto Ancestry. It's one of those I was going to go back to and never did. I was just going to look something up for you but Ancestry seems to be playing up! I also just looked at my tree settings and they were set to private but searchable so you should have been able to find my tree, but not see it fully (it gives you an option to contact). Anyway, I've now changed it to public so you should be able to find it providing Ancestry stops faffing about.

Hi Lorraine,
Jonathan is my 3x G grandfather on my paternal side, so I guess we're related - how close would depend on where your line of descent comes from. From Jonathan down my line goes - Jonathan (my 3 x g grandfather) - his son Robert (my 2 x g grandfather) - Robert's son George (my g grandfather) - George's daughter Alice (my grandmother). The Richardsons are a large and widespread family, with unfortunately not a whole heap of information around. If you let me know which line you descend from I can dig out what I have and see if I can help. Alternatively, if you're on Ancestry, you can find me on there as NadThomas with the Richardsonfamilytree.

CelticAnnie,

in 1871 your Thomas is a footman for Henry Hawkins, Magistrate of the County of Monmouth and landowner, living at 22 Moorfield Place, leominster, hereford

Go back 10 years, he is 14, is at Llysworney (listed reg dist Cowbridge) and is an under gardener for what looks like R Cook Carne Esq, sorry i can't read the address but he is a barrister, proprieter, magistrate not in practice, landed - the handwriting on this one is awful - perhaps some kind soul on here could look at it and make something else out for you

in 1851 he is with dad John and mum Ann in West Street, Llantwit Major, John is a Farm Labourer

Glad to be of help

Ahh,  clever you - I think you've probably got it  :)

Grange gardens now appears to be an area in Grangetown as opposed to an actual street, but there's still a Grange place and it's just off Corporation Road!

I had a quick peek at the census stuff and Emily's father Abraham (if I've got the right one) is a police man at Grangetown police station in 1891, although he appears to have remarried and moved to Southampton in 1901.

Just re-read my post, being from Wales does not discount Cardiff which is of course the capital of Wales, what I meant was they seem to have stayed in llantwit Major, not moving to Cardiff city itself.

or MANLEY - lots of those in Cardiff
It appears that the families of Thomas and Eliza are from Wales and Scotland, so no obvious link to cardiff, although llantwit major, where Thomas was born isn't far away, so not beyond the realms of knowing people there (and prior to his work in the asylum Thomas worked for a barrister in Cowbridge, again not far away)
