William Gittens wife Ann’s maiden name was Jones so it stands to reason the Jones showing as a lodger was likey a relative.

We have Diana and children 1851 Census and think this is possibly Charles/Diana 1841 :)

1841 Census                      HO107/1036/16/Rattlesden

Rattlesden, Suffolk

Elizabeth DEATH, 55, widow
Diana, 30
Charles, 25, butcher
Robert, 20, butcher         al born in county

Trish

EDIT this appears to be wrong as there is a baptism for this Diana  ( submitted) to parents Francis/Frank  DEATH and Elizabeth GOOCH.

THESE STILL COULD BE CHARLES parents.

Too late for me/off to bed,

cheers,
trish

Hi guys

This lot are ancestors of my wife's family. The father Francis Death was a butcher, as we're two of his sons Charles & Robert, their sister Diana was an in keeper I'm told. Their brother Gerorge Gooch Death is my wifes GGGG grandfather. Their mother was Elizabeth Gooch. A lot of them emigrated to New Zealand.

Regards
Andy

Evening

I have the "DOWNS" one saved in my tree for the 1853 census. I'd need to get back into this side of the tree to give you more specifics but I have Edwards Father as Thomas Downes & mother Elizabeth (Emma) Turner. I believe Thomas was a Blacksmith in NASH - there is another Thomas Downes in Nash who is a blacksmith but he isn't our one I don't think. Edwards wife Jane Gittens - I have her parents listed as William & Ann, no maiden name for Ann.

May I ask how you fit into the family? I wasn't aware of anyone else other than a cousin researching & she has stopped for a few years now :-)

Cheers

Hi
Re the place Sarah Rutherford is native of - could it be Desertcreat which is relatively near Cookstown where her husband is from?  I know it doesn't look like that, but realise that this information is being given to an English or even an Australian official, by someone with probably a strong Irish accent - say it phonetically and you'll see what I mean.
Presume you know that 'no complaint' after the R&W bit means she had no complaint about the voyage out, not that she had no complaint as in disease?
Do we know the date of this?  or the ship?

Heya

I think your probably right - it was a ship called the "Elizabeth" and the date was August 1841 arriving in New South Wales , Australia - into Sydney I believe.

They were in NZ a year or two after that I believe.

Hi

Since confirmed it is indeed GILLIES, not Gillis.

So Eleanor GILLIES married Andrew WALL, Sarah GILLIES married James RUTHERFORD.

Thanks again for your help.

So here is her husband James Rutherford - he may have been of scottish heritage do you think based on the surname (common scottish name) and his religion?

Can you tell he he was "brought out by" ?

Calling is carpenter yeah?

Very much so - thanks :-)

episcopalian - so she would have married a presbyterian then, what does that maybe mean? - In ireland does that mean maybe a scottish background? Gillies is quite a common scottish name yeah?

Cheers
