Thanks for that, I had found on the second term in the militia he confirmed he was from Kilkeel.  I do have the info regarding the family and I think from a different site someone had suggested a birth of a James but it was around 1852.  I have been looking at the militia records of other fagans or Fegans from Kilkeel and found Owen, Edward, Patrick, Francis and James all signed up for various terms.  Patrick was particularly interesting as he lists all the above brothers as next of kin and mother as Margaret.  James is described as James younger and Edward as Elder.  James second term he has his mother as next of kin and living in Workington but I am still searching to see if she died there, may have to take a trip to Record Office.  Thank you for the continued help it is invaluable.

Thank you for all that, I found the earliest militia attestation last night with him living at 4 Griffin St.   I found it on Find my past, is the later one on there or did you find it somewhere else?   He certainly moved up and down Griffin St.  Thank you so much for all that help, I will now go back to the 1911 census and see if the place he mentions ties up in any way shape or form to a place which could call itself Newry!

Yes Mary Murray was his second wife, his first wife Sarah Murphy died in 1901.  Yes he lived in Workington Cumberland and was born in Ireland.  I have come to these military records in an attempt to clarify his place of birth.  The 1911 census states Ireland but then it has been written in above a place which looks like Kilmannock, there is a separate thread regarding this originally started by someone else last year.
I am trying to get as definitive answer as is ever possible as to whether this man is linked to our family, it has always been assumed he was but the place of birth has cast doubt.  The military records may  or may not solve the conundrum!

Whilst trying to track down the place of birth of James Fagan I came across his very brief service record for WWI.  He was discharged as unfit for service but at the question have you served before he answers 18 yrs ?? and 2yrs South Africa.  I am trying to work out where he could have served for 18 years.  It looks like it says mubtion but could also say mulition or mubkia or mulikia.  The closest I have got is a Mount Mulikia which was part of a border dispute in Nigeria.  If anyone has any ideas or any ideas where I can look I would really appreciate it.

James' first wife was Sarah Murphy.  Edward is married to her sister   Elizabeth Murphy.  Edward married inFeb 1882 in Workington and his Marriage cert states his father as being Patrick (deceased)  I gained info regarding James from other people on this and other sites and so have never seen his marriage cert,  i have his marriage listed as 19 Sept 1889 Workington.  It is ages since I worked on this branch of my tree and I cannot for the life of me remember where the info came from.  From a quick search I can see it is not listed on Free BMD or ancestry but it may be second hand info or I may have obtained it from the records office.  I have never been able to find James on the 1901 census although Sarah and the children are there.  I also know from looking at the records Office that Owen Fagan is the Godfather of James and Sarah's daughter Rose Ann (Rose Hannah) 1901.  Owen is born Kilekeel and although at the moment I have yet to obtain his marriage cert, info I have from an Irish site is giving some strong indications to link him to Edward and I always thought James!  Now I am confused about James!!!!   Is this a confusing answer???
