Hello,

I am tracing the ancestors of Gladys Millicent Gabriel, born 12 Feb 1911 in Agra and baptised on 27 Feb 1911 at St Patrick's Church, Agra.

Gladys married Maurice Ellis and was widowed in the 1930s, and married again in the early 1940s to an Englishman serving in the Indian Army; they had two children in India before returning to the UK in the late 1940s where they settled in Westminster and had two further children.

Gladys was the second of three children born to Albert Sutton Gabriel and Alice Millicent Miles, her two brothers being:
i. Albert Charles Sutton Gabriel, born 05 Jan 1910 and baptised 23 Jan 1910 at St Patrick's, Agra.
ii. Trevor Arthur Patrick Gabriel, born 06 Mar 1912 and baptised on 21 Mar 1912 at St Patrick's, Agra.

At the time of their baptisms, Albert Sutton Gabriel's occupation was listed as Govt. Telegraphist Dept. Albert Snr died in Delhi in 1946 and Alice and Albert Jnr migrated to the UK, arriving in Liverpool from Bombay in 1948.

They later moved to suburban London where Alice died in 1956 and Albert Jnr became a naturalised British citizen in 1953; he died in 1963. He appears to have been in the Indian Army before leaving for the UK.

I am interested in finding out about Albert Sutton Gabriel and Alice Millicent Miles' parents/heritage and any information about what may have happened to Trevor. I think Albert and Alice were both born in India, but this is just a supposition.

I have a sub to FindMyPast but I think I have exhausted the records there - I wonder if anyone can point me to any other sources of information that could help?

Hi Matt, my name is Jordan Gadd and I think we're distant relatives! I know this original post is quite old but I just felt obliged to reply anyway so here goes. My dad's name is Michael Gadd and my grandad was Francis Gadd. Francis Gadd was born in 1928, his dad was Frank Gadd (my great granddad) who was born in 1905. Frank Gadd was Robert Gadd's brother, I believe Frank was the youngest sibling. Robert Gadd's full DOB was 14/12/1894, he married Emily Cutler in 1922. Emily Cutler was born: 11/08/1901. Our great granddad's were siblings! Perhaps we could help each other learn more about our ancestors? I hope you see this and reply! All the best, Jordan.

The marriage happened in 2006, and the indexes online only stretch to 2005 unfortunately.

An update for those interested:

I sent a letter to my aunt in mid-January along with a covering letter to the care organisation that manages the home.

I received an e-mail from the management of the home last week to thank me for my letter and say they were planning on broaching the subject with my aunt and showing her the letter last week. Not heard back since but they did say it could take some time.

One slight twist in the tale is that she was referred to as Mrs Smith* rather than her birth name, Jane Jones*. Although I had seen on Electoral Registers that up to 2005 she had been Jane Jones and since 2006 she was Jane Smith, I assumed that since I didn’t find a marriage online, she wasn’t married.

I went to London today to search the GRO marriage indexes 2006-2019 and there’s no marriage between a Jane Jones and a Mr Smith, so I’m none the wiser as to how she became Mrs Smith!

Will update when/if I hear more.

I've read them all through and given them much consideration and I do believe the right thing to do is contact my Aunt.
