Hi Heather,

I can't give you any figures, but I know couples did pass themthelves off as being married...when they clearly were not!
My own 3xGt Grandfather was living and working in Salford (Greengate district) as early as 1870. His first wife died and then he was soon living with his new partner (described as his wife on the next two census returns), but I know for a fact that they did not get married until some 20 years later after they had moved to Middlesbrough, which is where I found their Marriage Certificate! Why did they get married so late on? Legal/Probate reasons?

Regards,

Mark.

Adam/Stan,

Thanks for the additional information. I think a trip to the Records Office is the next step and we'll see if that clarifies anything...

Adam, I've posted some MI requests on the relevent postings so hopefully they will turn something up.

Once again, thanks for your efforts.

Mark.

Hi Adam,

Once again (and finally) could you give me the details for the SNAITH inscriptions in Escomb.
I popped across to the cemetery yesterday, but access to the few remaining stones was quite difficult!

Once again, thanks in advance.

Hi Adam,

Here's another one if you could be so kind...

Could you pass on the SNAITH Memorial Inscriptions for me? Hopefully, they will be relevent to my research. Thanks in advance.

So, are we agreed that inhabitants of St. Pauls, Witton Park would be interred in Escomb cemetery?

Do we know when Escomb cemetery opened?

Regards, Mark.

Hi Pauline,

Thanks for the link. Great site!
I found my relative in the 1841 directory and then other members once I got going!

Once again, thanks!

Hi Jean,

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I had a trip along to Escomb cemetery today and it's in quite a sorry state...There isn't even a sign indicating that it was indeed Escomb cemetery!
I came across a few stones, which mentioned individuals from Witton Park, so I'm guessing this was where they were all interred, but as I can't locate the burial registers, I'm a bit stuck. I don't expect to find a grave stone, but I was at least hoping to confirm his burial location.
As I say, the records office don't appear to hold the Burial registers and St. Pauls doesn't appear to have a churchyard so it must be Escomb Cemetery?!?!
I'll have a go at the council and ask them for the information. At the same time, I'' double-check with the records office. If I find anything, I'll let you know...
Regards,

Mark.

Does anyone have access to the above directory?

If so, could you please lookup a RICHARD FORRESTER for me and pass on the details?

Thanks in advance. Mark.
