Hi. Thanks for the links.

I got this information about the family tree from this Edgar newsletter where it says that there is a "rogue" family in the Monaghan area. I requested it. There are no apparent links with this main Edgar family and my family, even though many of the names are shared. Again, it's one of those 'brick walls'.

Possible birth for Jane?
Jane Hewitt Edgar July/Sept.1902 Monaghan registration district, volume 3 page 193

and did Samuel have a middle name?

Edit: Although that sounds like it must be my gran, I just remembered that my mum thinks her name was Jane Elizabeth Edgar. Mind you, this is from a woman who calls herself Jean Elizabeth, yet on her birth certificate she is Jane Eliza! Makes it very difficult to track these people. Many thanks though for looking.

I don't know about gran's brother Samuel having a middle name. I know that he died in about 1947 (according to my mum) and had become a Quaker.

It is interesting that the name of Jane's parents aren't easy to find. This family has been a bit of a brick wall and shrouded in mystery. Now I have Jane's birth date and details I will send of for her birth cert and see if that throws up any more facts.

Jane married my grandfather Edward Mullen (b 1888  in LA, Ca but moved back to Elphin, Roscommon after a few weeks) and I suppose this would have been just after WW1. Don't know where they would have been married (or indeed if they actually DID get married). He was RC and she was C of I but it seemed the family followed a C of I path. Lots of 'brick walls' in this story.

Many thanks again for all the information so far. I'll keep digging.  :)

Wow! Thanks for all this information and so quickly too. I did find the census return (above) but no information about my g grandfather. If only the census had been 20 years' earlier!
 :)

I have a real stumbling block on finding the name of my g grandfather. None of the names mentioned relate to him. He had a son(also called Samuel b 1890 in Co Monaghan) and my grandmother Jane Edgar born, I think, about 1900 in Co Monaghan.

I'm relatively inexperienced in searching the resources. I think I will have to pay to view some records on Ancestry to see if I can get a bit more information re: birth certificates and names.

Armagh / Emily McGowan b1853 (co Armagh) married Samuel Edgar b abt 1850 (Co Monaghan)

Hello.

I am trying to trace information on my gg grandparents (above). They had 10 children, one being Samuel Wesley Edgar who died in France in the last days of WW1. Their eldest son (my g grandfather Edgar) was born about 1870 in either Co Monaghan or Armagh, but I have no first name for him. His grandfather was called James, so I'm assuming he might be called this too.

I am interested in finding out the name of Emily's parents and if she had any other siblings. I have no further information about where in Co Armagh she was born. She married Samuel Edgar and they lived in Co Monaghan. One of Samuel's siblings was born in Mullaghbawn, Co Armagh so it's likely to be in that area.

Any information on the McGowan family would be appreciated. I assume they were either CofI or Presbyterian.
Also if anyone can shed any light on my mysterious g grandfather: ? Edgar, that would be great.
Many thanks.  :)

Hi Mogue.

Thanks for this info. Just stumbled on it as when I signed on here it was to a junk mail only e-mail account! How wrong I was to do that.  Your information is really interesting. I will have a look at the Murphy side. All Monamolin must be related so when people moved to England in the 1940s onwards, it must have been a great relief to the gene pool!

Wow! Tom the Jock one of 8? I had only heard of his brother Thomas. So my grandfather stayed with his widowed granny? My own father (also called Patrick) had to do the same when his Mum (Mary Ivory) died. All these reoccurring patterns...

I've spoken to Paddy Ivory (lovely chap!!) in the past. Even though Ivory must be a pretty uncommon name, it doesn't appear that we have any direct connection. How odd is that?

I'll have to encode my e-mail address. It's * I would love to have more information on the Swords family. What a great name.

Many thanks.

Thanks a lot for supplying this information, moguemosey. I thought I'd found all the information I could.

I now know that I am also a direct decendant of James Kinsella and Mary Sinnott (There must be a lot of us around now...hundreds probably!) They are my Gx5 grandparents. Patrick Burke and Margaret Swords are my GG grandparents. Amazing to stumble on this information.  :)

Here are photos of great grandparents' grave (Thomas and Catherine Burke)and my G Grandfather's brother  (Patrick Burke) and his wife (Margaret) and their son (Michael's) grave.  They are buried in the Monamolin graveyard.

My g grandmother was born Catherine Murphy and was known as 'Bow-wow' and her and Tom lived in Monamolin/Boolavogue.

Anyway, I don't know if the dates on the stones help at all or will just confuse matters as I don't know how many Burkes there are in that area. My grandfather was also called Patrick Burke and was born (I think) in 1899, possibly in Coolroe, but lived at Ballinavounia, Kilmuckridge until he died in 1984.

With regards the Burke Connection, I know that all these names are in my family who orginated from Monamolin.

I think that the Patrick Burke you are referring to is my great, great uncle. I have very scant knowledge as I live in England but my great grandfather, Thomas Burke, was born c1880. He married Catherine Murphy who became known as 'Mrs Bow wow?' and she died aged 100 in 1974. They are buried in Monamolin churchyard and I think they were known for training horses or having stables.

When I visited a while ago, I was told there are descendents still around the area: Kinsellas, Kavanaghs, Cousins feature prominently.

I have a photo (attached) of a gravestone in Monamolin churchyard which may help. My GG uncle was Patrick Burke who died on 30 March 1963 aged 81. Margaret Burke, his wife, died 27 October 1961 aged 80. They are interred with their son Michael who died 21 April 1953 aged 39. Of more interest to you is that also interred are a Kinsella family.

Hello.

Just looking for some info on the family of Thomas. He would have been my great uncle on my granny Mary Ivory's side. He also had two brothers: Patrick and William.

I believe Thomas went to Tipperary and had a family and I'd love to find out more about the Ivorys as I know nothing about them.

Any info gratefully received.
