The Common Room / Re: Duplicate Ceremonies in Two Locations
« on: Friday 31 October 14 03:23 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks for posting the two marriages for Thomas Small and Sophia.  Are your related to them?
I am very grateful for your pointing out  the duplication.  It is helping to solve some mysteries in my family tree.  I think I've worked it out -Sophia Denman was in a de facto relationship with Mr Drake probably William .  They had a daughter called Sophia Hannah Drake who was baptized on 26 September 1810 at St George in the East Stepney.  Then sometime before her marriage to Thomas in 1814 William died.  Sophia then married Thomas under her maiden name at his parish but because she was known at St James Westminster as Mrs Drake and had a daughter she had to be married as a widow under the name of Sophia Drake in her own parish. Incidentally Thomas Small purchased a marriage licence which was granted on 1 September 1814 at Westminster in the names of Sophia Drake widow and Thomas Small Esquire.

Hi

Just for the record, Ann Stirrup was born in 1784 in London.  She married James Hodson in 1831 at Scots Church Sydney.  Family stories say James left her and returned to England.  James was an assistant commissiary general.  Other than that I know nothing about him.  James was her third husband and Ann did have  3 daughters by her first 2 husbands. They were all born in England.  By the time Ann married James Hodson she would have been 47 .  To my knowledge they had no children.  Written by
Ann's great, great, great , great grand daughter.

Census and Resource Discussion / Re: 1851 query????????

Should be Gostwyck MASEY.  His parents were deceased by 1851.  His mother was Elizabeth Warren CORY born  1797 in Devon.  Her parents were John CORY and Mary GOSTWICK.  Gostwyck emigrated to Australia  as did his siblings Edward Gostwyck, Mary Jane and Maria. The four of them married but only Edward G has living descendants.  Elizabeth Warren MASEY married and stayed in England and has living descendants.  Frances Cory MASEY died in England soon after marrying.

Gostwyck died in 1917 in New South Wales, Australia.

US Lookup Requests / Re: JOHN WRAY BORN c 1833 in IRELAND

Hey Guys

Thanks for all your ideas and Lookups.  Unfortunately the Quincy John Wray is not him .  Wrong mother!    I contacted someone with him in their tree and I can confirm he is definitely not the John Wray I am looking for.  I also looked at the John Wray who died in Illinois in 1919 and also found he was not the one!  It's probable that as my John Wray was only about 10 when he arrived in Canada that census details are incorrect.  The spelling of his surname may have also changed.  I think now it woud be a miracle to find him.

Sorry I onlly know that John Wray arrived in Ontario Canada in 1843 and that he later went to the USA.  Other than that I know nothing.  I have searched the various censuses and  my last hope is that one of his descendants if there are any  might see my post.

Thank you.  I had a close look at him but unfortunately he's not the one.  Different mother.

John Wray left Hastings County, Ontario Canada for the USA sometime after 1843.  His parents are Thomas Wray and Mary Morton.  He did not end up in Quincy Illinois as I have checked that one.  His brother William left him $300 in his will proved in 1916 so JOhn would have still been around then.  Can anyone work out where he went and what he did?  He may have been a farmer.
