Cumberland / Re: Louise M. Holme, O.B.E.
« on: Thursday 06 February 14 03:29 GMT (UK)  »
I rather wonder if she caused or suffered a split from her family? All BMD entries appear to confirm the true family name as "Holmes".

The 1911 census entry shows her as "Louie Holmes", as if her employer was perfectly well aware of her proper name, but then scratches out the final "s".

She presumably joined the QMAAC as "Holme, but there is no surviving service record (as others have found).

More interestingly, her Medal Index Card in the name of Holmes, LOUIE, gives "Enlisted 15/10/1917, Discharged 08/09/1919 (Medically Unfit)." No medal entitlement is shown, but it does mention List WAAC/344. This is a Silver War badge Roll.

Going to this roll we have:  WAAC/344 Worker 4100 Holmes LOUIE, [dates as above], Badge Number B338743, Medically Unfit - Served Overseas: YES.

Now what do we make of a zero campaign medal entitlement against the statement that she served overseas?

Rutland Lookup Requests / Jarvis from Little Casterton
« on: Thursday 07 March 13 02:30 GMT (UK)  »
I'm so disappointed Little Casterton baptisms don't seem to be online yet, and wondered if anyone can help?

At least three Jarvis brothers, Thomas (1781), Francis (1789) and Robert (1796) seem to have been born in L.C. and scattered to Hornsey and Edmonton, Middlesex, or Lincolnshire, where they started families.

Any help with piecing together this family would be greatly appreciated.

Paul

Well that's very generous, Phil. Good luck with your projects, too!

Phil, that's really useful, thanks for all your work.

Hadlow Down, interestingly, is half-way between Mayfield (where Mary was born) and Uckfield where she spent most of the rest of her short life.

I will probably stump up for her death certificate at some point, as well as that for her youngest daughter Harriet Mew whose death is registered in the same quarter.

What a life! 3 children by an unknown partner - all died by the age of 5. 3 children by George Mew - 2 died by the age of 2 and one other (Benjamin) in the workhouse at 15 and then disappears without a death registration that i've ever discovered.

From the regular intervals between the first 3 births, she probably had a steady guy. Wonder what made him give up on her (if indeed it was his initiative). Would be interesting to see if they figure in newspapers, courts or parish relief.

Do you have a particular interest in the Mews, Phil?

Paul

P.S. I'm going through the Little Horsted descendants, picking up any holes with a view to directed research. For example there are only 4 Uckfield civil registrations I can't place in the tree and i'll be getting certificates for these. And one death registration i managed to use for two Thomases! Plenty of cases where i'll be looking for baptisms and burials.

After all that success last week, i'll chance my luck with another (big) question)  :)

The Little Horsted Mews became the main Sussex heartland (260 descendants, 170 with surname Mew).

It seems to me the Little Horsted bunch came from Framfield but i've got no proof.....   :-*

Thanks ever so much. Seems like Mary Ann also died (Q1 1849), again about 4. What a dreadful story.

Seems baby Caroline could have died q1 1853, just before her mother married.
