Roxburghshire / Will a Grenah's Death Ballad
« on: Thursday 18 September 25 10:41 BST (UK)  »
'Will a Grenah's Death' is a ballad about Will Armstrong of Greena being killed by Will Foster of Stanegarthside in a duel at Tourneyholm. I've searched all the usual sources, but can't find the earliest printed source of the ballad.
Can anyone provide any links, please?
Cheers,
Bob

The Common Room / Louis of France and his bribes to the English
« on: Saturday 09 August 25 10:14 BST (UK)  »
In the 1660s, Louis of France bribed King Charles to encourage him to get more deeply involved in the Spanish Netherlands conflict. In 1666, Sydney was given 100,000 crowns to help remove the monarch. It seems that a 1678 French  document detailed some 25 English gentlemen who had been paid bribes to remove Charles. Most of the bribes were 500 Guineas.

Does anyone know of any works that give more details re the above?

Many thanks. Nothing with an extra 'r'   in Straffan, so assume this is the only one.

I know of Straffan in Co Kildare, but can anyone tell me if there is also an estate called Straffarn (with an 'r') in Kildare?

Cheers,
Bob

Scotland / Anonymous History of Scotland
« on: Monday 07 July 25 14:13 BST (UK)  »
I gather that there is an account of the murder of Sir John Carmichael by some Border reivers in 1600. It appears in the 'Anonymous History of Scotland.' There is said to be a version of the event held by the National Library of Scotland. I  can't seem to locate it. Can anyone help?
Cheers,
Bob
