If you search here -> http://cavan.brsgenealogy.com/ for a Francis Walsh, you'll see an available baptism record for a Francis George Walsh in 1861. For 5 eur you can see an abstract of the record. (registering and indexing is free, btw)

At least I now have company in the club ;)

I started with the Superintendent Registrar in Cavan for my GGrandparents - no luck. I then found the church record through IFHF. I went back to the Cavan registrar with the date from the church record, and still no luck, although they certainly tried.

I'm not sure what to suggest. My next step is to try to touch the parish register to see what other clues might exist in the book. Perhaps there are notations or other connecting records that might help. Unfortunately, I don't get to visit Ireland as frequently as I would like, so it sits on my list of things to do.

One other quick thought... you might get a clue as to Kate's mother's name from the name of Kate and Patrick's oldest daughter. Not always, but it was a often used convention. The second daughter might be named after Phillip's mother. Just something to consider.

Even though you can't visit Ireland until next year, you can visit the web site of the GRO -> http://www.gro.ie/fees.htm. The Cavan office has been very helpful to me in the past. (Addresses and phone numbers at the bottom of the page.)

I suspect that the marriage record you found at the IFHF site also had a Parish/District included. That's a clue as to where Kate likely lived, since they probably were married in her Parish. You could request the civil marriage record from the GRO since you know the date. They're pretty good at searching. It may not get you more than you already have, but you don't know without seeing it. It might at least have their ages. Older records sometimes just say Full Age or something to that effect, but hopefully an 1898/1899 record will have the ages.

You could also try for Kate (Catharine's) birth in 1873'ish, father Philip, mother unknown, but it might be better to hopefully confirm the age from the marriage record first.

Regarding your mother, aunts and uncles... My father, aunts and uncles all swore that my Grandfather was from Ballinamore, Co Leitrim.  I finally tracked down his birth record in Bawnboy, Co Cavan. My GGrandfather was a baker who also moved around quite a bit.  There were 5 children born in Arda, Bawnboy, Crossdoney and Granard. Eventually the family settled down in Ballinamore, when my Grandfather was about 15, but he never actually lived there. He was working with an uncle on the family homestead in Garrymore.  So don't let family lore get in the way. (btw, full disclosure, the GRO could not find a marriage record for my GGrandparents although I did find the church record info at IFHF.)

Good luck.

Cavan / Re: Michael Smith 1896-1982 from Co Cavan

Closing thought, and depending on your financial situation and time table, you could pay the Cavan Genealogy Centre; or you could request the film of the quarterly index of births for 1896 from the LDS to identify the registration district; or you could shell out 20 euro to look at the 4 M Smith records at BRF to see if there is a Micahel Bridget connection.

Like so many things in life - time and money.

Ok, so here are some other thoughts, some that are helpful here in the US. Not sure how easy it is for your situation with Scotland.

Are there any Military records that might exist? Draft cards have been immensely valuable over here.

Did Michael ever apply for a passport, and is that information accessible?

When did he move to Scotland?  Would there be an immigration document?  I suspect not given the marriage date, but I thought I would ask.

When he moved to Scotland, did he go alone or travel with others, which might help narrow down the townland?

Finally, back to my original note, if you have a lot of free time, and patience, you can walk through each Parish individually and look for matches on Michael Smith's birth in 1896 at the BRS site. It's tedious (and even more so now that they have broken the parish info into the respective religions), but I have had success with that in the recent past. That will at least give you some additional information.

You can likewise look for a potential marriage of Patrick and Bridget. This is trickier since you don't know when they married, and it is way more tedious than the Michael-birth exercise. Start with a date 5 years before Michael's birth (1891) and go with the +/- 4years. I would start with identifying the parish where Bridget Lynch may have married, and then for each match, see if there is a corresponding Patrick Smith. And if that parish lined up with Michael's birth, you could feel good, but  don't get overly optimistic or pessimistic since the marriage likely occurred in her parish, but they may have settled in his.

And who knows, you might be able to then use IGI to find the parents of Patrick and Bridget!

Best of luck.

I tried looking here --> http://cavan.brsgenealogy.com/ to see how many Michael Smith’s may have been born in Cavan in 1896. While it’s not an incredibly large number, fewer would have been better. And there may be more that are not included in this data base.

Action   Source   Surname   First Name   Year   County
Church Baptism    Smith    Michael    1896    Co. Cavan
Church Baptism    Smith    Michael    1896    Co. Cavan
Church Baptism    Smith    Michael    1896    Co. Cavan
Church Baptism    Smith    Michael    1896    Co. Cavan
Church Baptism    Smyth    Michael Francis    1896    Co. Cavan

You could request a copy of the birth cert from the GRO (http://www.gro.ie/fees.htm) but you run the risk of multiple births in the same month. From my own experience, I would not feel too confident about the exact date in the register. Much of my family used their baptism date for their birthday and not once have I seen a register date match the stated birth date.  ;)

I’m no expert, but you may need to start with his marriage record in order to pin down a more precise birth location (townland/parish). With that information you could access the 1901 and 1911 Census records at a Family History Center (http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp )which will provide more information about Patrick/Bridget and any siblings.

Good luck.
