England / Re: BRITANNIA HEARD (nee HOADLEY) & Fairgrounds

Just a quick reply to begin with: Walker Hoadley's marriage certificate (16th January 1854 to Matilda Coleman) gives James Hoadley, Hawker, as his father. He gave his age as 21 at the time. Will look up the others as time permits.

My interest in the Hoadley family is through my research into fairground travellers in the north-east. If I have done my work correctly James Hoadley married Sarah Furminger and they had ten children:
James-born c1823 married Prescilla
William-born c1826 married Britannia Buckley
Horatio-born c1827 married Druscilla Coleman
Sarah-born c1830 married Edward Camfield
Walker-born c1932 married Matilda Coleman 16th January 1854
Alice-born c1834 married Ben Tapsell
Aquilla-born c1838 married Ellen Camfield
Samson-born  c1844 married Matilda Parker
Elizabeth-born c1845-no further trace found
Job-born c1847 married Matilda Toogood

The main fairground links were Walker Hoadley's family, who were based around Gateshead/Newcastle upon Tyne and Job who seems to have travelled more at the other side of the country, around Westmoreland. The intention is to use the research in an article about North East Showmen in our (Fairground Society) magazine. If anyone can make any corrections or additions I would be interested to hear from you.

I have just found this topic whilst I was also carrying out some research on the Oadley/West families and finding all the difficulties you seem to have had. I am the editor of the Platform magazine, the quarterly journal of the Fairground Society. I was preparing an article to accompany some images I have f both Kitchener, Harriet Oadley's Fowler engine, that later became the Iron Maiden, and the Wallis Pride of Merthyr. If anyone is interested in seeing copies please send me a message with e-mail address and I will send them.

As well as Robert Oadley/West who married Samuel Whiting's daughter in 1889, there was also James Oadley/West who died in Nottingham infirmary on 6th July 1929 aged 56, and was buried at Normanton cemetery with his wife, who died 14th August 1912.

James also travelled amusements around the Notts/Derby area.

I have also read that Robert Oadley was born in Kidlington, Oxon, even though he says Bristol on the 1891 census. Perhaps this was a deliberate error to distance himself from the connections with his father?

I have got some more information and will post more when I can put it together in a more readable form.
