Dublin / Re: 14 Charlotte Street Dublin

Hi Miriam

I found a photo from about 1910 at http://www.emerald-isle-gifts.com/vintage-irish-town-prints/dublin-city-center-vintage-photographs/charlotte-st---dublin-city.asp

I'm interested because my grandmother lived at 16 Charlotte Street in 1901. Sadly there's no trace of it any more as far as I'm aware.

Hi Diane

Glad it jogged something. I managed to get pension records for an ancestor of mine, plus their service records and muster rolls from Kew and they were very interesting with info I didn't have already. A pension is possible through length of service so your ancestor might have qualified.

Hi

Don't know if you're aware of military papers at the National Archives. Did a quick search by name and 'royal marines' link below gives the results:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/search/search_results.aspx?Page=1&ContainAllWords=william+jones&DateFrom=1851&DateTo=1858&SelectedDatabases=A2A%7cARCHON%7cBOOKSHOP%7cCABPAPERS%7cDOCUMENTSONLINE%7cEROL%7cMOVINGHERE%7cNRA%7cNRALISTS%7cPREM19%7cRESEARCHGUIDES%7cE179%7cCATALOGUE%7cWEBSITE%7cTRAFALGAR&SelectedSubjects=C20090&SearchType=Advanced

You also say he was retired from the RM so may have been in receipt of a pension from Chelsea - records also at Kew.

Wicklow / Re: Rathdrum Workhouse 1840's

I understand that the workhouse records for Rathdrum stop at 31st March 1914. I don't know if that's because it became a hospital or because the records are lost. Certainly in April 1914 I have a death certificate still citing the place of death as Rathdrum Union Workhouse.

Don't know if anyone is still chasing Rathdrum Workhouse records but the Wicklow Family History Centre keeps them on behalf of the National Archives. As a result, they don't charge for searches. I was able to trace my great grandfather's admissions as a result. Unfortunately they only go as far as March 1914.

In the 1911 census, 'inmates' were only identified by initials - not sure if this was an attempt to maintain confidentiality or to dehumanise them.

I don't know if you proved the Dunkineely connection or got any further but I live in Dunkineely and would be happy to help out with any searches locally if you need it. There were 36 Givens living in the area in the 1911 census and there are certainly still Deanes in the area.

Warwickshire / Re: Additional info

You said you were a newbie last year so don't know how far you've progressed. Some of my ancestors were from Hartshill and I managed to trace them between 1587 and 1851. The parish record (Mancetter) films are in Nuneaton Library and the originals are in the Warwickshire Archives in Warwick. I also found school records and poor law records at the archives.

There were also an excellent couple of books by a Hartshill historian (I'm afraid I can't remember her name offhand but the books are in Nuneaton Library) and I found references to my own family in there. Unfortunately she died a few years ago.

Good luck.

Warwickshire Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Registration district
« on: Friday 26 February 10 18:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hartshill was in the parish of Mancetter before the Hartshill parish was established fairly late in the 19th century (1887 from memory). My ancestors are from there and I spent ages looking in Atherstone before I knew. Civil registration might also be carried out in Nuneaton as Hartshill is right on the border. Did you know there is a Hartshill in Staffordshire as well?

What was the name and date you were looking for - I can't see it in previous posts?
