Census and Resource Discussion / Re: Lancashire 1901

 ;)

Thanks Pauline, thought I had tried every possible way, I've just tried with the piece and folio - no success - then I tried just with the piece no and got 8000+ possibles, rather than search through them all I added the surname Sykes - then I realised that they are listed alphabetically with first names first.

I then tried with the name Jemima as this was the least common name, I came up with two possibles Jemima Ker and Jemima Liptick - I tried Jemima Ker and bingo!

When I viewed the actual census doc the head of the family Ben Sykes looks a bit like Bensy Ker!  Just goes to show that you shouldn't give up too easily...

(I wonder who Jemima Liptick is?)

Hi

I have a census name index for a family for 1901 from the s&n site, however when searching for them on Ancestry in order to view the original document I can't find them, the details are as follows:

Sykes Ben 57 Burnley East Ward  3861 96a
Sykes Jemima  47    "          "            "        "
Sykes Jemima   20   "          "            "        "
Sykes Ben   18         "          "            "        "
Sykes John 15         "           "            "        "

I have tried searching in various ways (with and without the piece number) without success.  Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks for the quick response!

I received a cert today for his marriage in 1894 to Everlena Bell, so I better start a search for her death and his second marriage.

cheers

Thanks Jap for checking with the original, I have a transcription.  I suspect that the age of Margaret is an error, (could it possibly read as 29 instead of 27).  Her marriage cert shows her as 18, the 1841 shows her as 20 yrs so she should be 29 or 30 by the time of the 1851.

Anyway I don't think there's anything wrong with a woman knocking a few years off her age!

I will follow the advise of rootschatters and take a look at Scotlands People - I don't hold out much hope though as she was born before registration.

Thanks to everyone who has replied so far...

regards
Val

Hi Bee

Margaret's husband was Alexander Hunter, he was a cutler born Attercliffe, Sheffield.

They did move about abit though - so far I have them married 1839 in York, 1841 in Knaresborough, 1844 in Hull (son John born), 1848 in Kent (daughter Catherine born), 1851 lodging in Pontefract, 1851/52 in Hull (son Alexander born), 1861 no sign of Alexander Snr but Alexander jnr and Catherine were in the York union workhouse.

In 1866 the workhouse ledger records that Margaret was the mother of Alexander jnr and Catherine, their father is said to have deserted them. (Maybe he's not worth looking for after all)

Margaret's father was called William Davison he was described as a Hawker on her marriage certificate.

Thanks for your interest
Val

Hi Bee

I posted a message on the Scotland site and a few suggestions have been made, firstly that it could have been misheard and was Dumfries, the second was a place called Damfoot in Roxburgh.

The Scotland link has thrown me a bit as I thought I had found Margaret's family in Wintringham Yorkshire following a search on the IGI records.

As she was born before 1837 it's all a bit vague -

Thanks
Val
