Shropshire Lookup Requests / Griffiths of Hopesay
« on: Sunday 18 January 09 18:25 GMT (UK)  »
Listers,

I am having trouble locating the birth record of my gg-grandfather John Griffiths.  I have ordered a few from GRO, with negative results.

At the time of the 1861 UK Census, he was about 9 months old, born in Hopesay and living in Perry Gutter, Hopesay, with his father William Griffiths and mother, Charlotte Tedstone.  William and Charlotte were married on 11 Sept 1859 in the parish of Hopesay, in the county of Salop.

Charlotte's parents were John Tedstone and Martha Tedstone and William's father's name was John.

Thanks in advance for your help,

Dan

Maurice,

Thanks so much!  To both of you for your assistance.  In just a few days I've made some serious progress.  I've been stuck on this one for few years now.

Again, much appreciated.  And I'll probably be back with more questions after I receive these documents.   :)

Delta,

That is most interesting as the family bible mentions the Tedstone name twice.

The first time is says that James Badger, born November 11th, 1827 (hard to read) married Emily Tedstone Griffiths, born September 3rd, 1854, on May 11th, 1886 at Middleton Scriven Nr Bridgnorth Salop.

The second time Tedstone is mentioned is for Robert George Tedstone of Birmingham, died October 4th, 1895, aged 65 years.

I'll have to do some more digging on the Tedstone/Griffiths relationship angle, but it appears that I can say that the individuals you located in the Census' are my family.  I'll first try and locate a marriage record for William and Charlotte.  That should provide me with whether or not Charlotte was a widow or not.

Awesome stuff.  Thank you so much!  This is a huge breakthrough for me! Dan

Hey Maurice/Delta,

I agree as well.  When I got home from work last night I did some general queries for Hopesay and located a map that showed Craven Arms very close by.

Can I order a Census record from the GRO?  I'd love to see if, when I get the birth and death records back from the GRO, they match up with the Census record.

And another quick question about Shropshire, from some of the reading I did last night, it appears that the County was once considered part of Wales, is this true?

Thanks, Dan

Thanks for looking that up for me.

At this point I do not have anything else to go on.  I have ordered the birth record of who I hope is John and the death certificate of William that is listed in the family bible.  I'm hoping from those two documents that they are in fact the right people and that they are related.

Thanks again for looking and as soon as I get more information, hopefully I can confirm one way or another that the information you provided is on the correct Griffiths.

Could someone look up the name William Griffiths in the 1871 Census for Shropshire.  William was born around 1830 and according to a family bible, was from Craven Arms, Shropshire.  When he died in 1890, the bible showed him still living in Craven Arms.

If this is a ggg-grandfather, he would've had a son named John, born in Craven Arms in 1864, living with him.

Thanks a bunch,

Dan

Nanny Jan,

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.  That is fantastic.

I think I'll send off for those records to see if they are in fact my relatives.  It certainly looks good.

Again, much appreciated.

Shropshire Lookup Requests / Griffiths of Craven Arms

I am having a hard time locating any of my Griffiths family from Craven Arms, Shropshire.  I believe the sub-district is Ludlow from other messages on this list, but is there a specific district I should be looking at?

The Griffiths I am trying to locate are John Griffiths, born in and around 1865 in Craven Arms, Shropshire (according to the 1891 UK Census from Weston Mare).  And, from a family bible, I believe his father may have been William Griffiths.  In the bible, it states the following:  "William Griffiths of Craven Arms died April 29th, 1890, aged 61 years."

I am hoping someone out there can help.  Thanks in advance, Dan

I have found them on the 1901 Census living in Bristol, Gloucestershire.  The problem is both my g-grandfather and my gg-grandfather for some unknown reason were not living with the rest of the family in 1901, or at least when the census was taken.  Nobody in my family knows why.

As for the 1881 Census, I have not had any luck with my gg-grandfather not knowing exactly when he was born nor who his parents were.  My gg-grandmother, Jessie, was living in an orphanage in and around Birmingham, if its the right person, with several other siblings.
