Could someone please find the baptism of Thomas Carr around 1806/7 in Newbury. I doubt if he was the brother of John as they were born in different counties according to the census returns. If they had the same father, that would clinch it. John's parents were Richard Carr and Mary nee Wilson. Many thanks.

There are two Anns in Newbury according to the GRO website:

CARR, ANN       JONES
GRO Reference: 1842  J Quarter in NEWBURY  Volume 06  Page 212

FreeBMD gives this as 6 214 so obviously a mistake.

CARR, ANN       PLANK
GRO Reference: 1844  M Quarter in NEWBURY  Volume 06  Page 229

So Thomas married Elizabeth Jones (not Palmer) and John married Ann Plank.

I'm getting there!

All the children except Ann had died by 1851

Ann nee Plank died in childbirth as she was buried 2 days before her son William was baptised on 8 May 1848. He died on 24 Feb 1849.

Thanks Capetown. The problem I have is with Ann Carr, my 2nd great-grandmother. The Parish Register entry for Ann's baptism is 30 Jan 1844:  It lists her parents as Thomas and Ann. Thomas was listed as a Papermaker. Her Birth certificate 1 week earlier gives John and Ann as her parents. Her Marriage certificate also shows John as her father (Sawyer). All the censuses give her birthplace as Newbury (Except 1861 which says Reading). I looked at the logs of Newbury Union Workhouse when I was at the Berkshire Record Office some years ago and it showed John in the workhouse after his wife Ann (Plank) had died in 1848. They had several children, most of whom died in the workhouse but Ann is not mentioned.
John was born in Great Bedwyn in Wiltshire and Thomas was born in Newbury, so that puts doubt on them being brothers. I'm still confused...

Does anyone have anything at all about Carr families in Newbury 1790 - 1850. My ancestor John Carr b 1798 in Great Bedwyn, Wiltshire is proving to be very elusive. He lived in Newbury 1820 - 1845 and would have married Ann? around 1831. Thanks.
