I am grateful to Comberton for sending me a message with these details. The Daily List date of 1 December 1916 ties in with a reply I received in answer to a similar enquiry on The Great War Forum:

'It appears that his 'Home Town of Enlistment' was Horton and he's on the Daily List of 1/12/1916. Normally I say 3-4 weeks from injury to appearing on the list, so 28th Oct seems good enough.'

Comberton mentions: 'Source
Daily Casualty Lists Reported In Newspapers, Originally From His Majesty's Stationery Office'

If I can't find anything in the newspapers, presumably the HMSO have archives and they are at Kew ?

Thanks for your advice. I have trawled through the microfilm copies of The Windsor, Eton and Slough Express for October 1916 onwards in Slough library, but can find no entry for my uncle. I certainly cannot afford The Genealogist's Diamond subscription!

I have also investigated the 2nd Bn's War Diary and have come to the conclusion that my uncle was almost certainly wounded in the attack on Le Transloy on 23 October 1916, in which the battalion suffered nearly 200 casualties. Unfortunately, only the names of officers are given.

I shall take your advice and try The Times Digital Archive.

Roy.

I am researching the military career of my maternal uncle, who was killed on 21st March 1918 near Saint Quentin, while serving with the Royal Berkshire's 8th battalion. After serving for 9 months in the Berkshire Yeomanry, he was initially drafted into the 2nd battalion in September 1916, where he was wounded shortly afterwards.
His service records were destroyed during World War II, and the only record I can find of his wounding is the attached from thegenealogist.com. As I don't subscribe to their Diamond account, does anyone have any idea what this record could be?

A great photo of the Two Brewers has just been posted on a local forum:

I was going to mention the Newbury.net Forum, where there is a good deal of discussion about old pubs, often illustrated with old photos. There was a splendid picture of the original Old London Apprentice posted there nearly 2 years ago at:

Berkshire Completed Look ups / Re: What happened to Ann Payne/Pain?

Thanks for this, can you find anything further on Roger Spanswick or Albert?

Kind regards

I'm afraid not. All I have is the census return mentioned.

Roy.

There's a widower Roger Spanswick in 1851:

Class: HO107; Piece: 1833; Folio: 319; Page: 2

He is aged 34 employed as a servant in Wanborough and has a 7 year old Albert Spanswick with him, born in Eastbury, Berkshire.

I don't know if this is of any help or even relevant, but I have a copy of the 1901 Census for Great Shefford which lists the two occupants of this house - Wlliam Spanswick, shoemaker aged 61, and his sister Adelaide, house helper aged 69. Both single and born in West Shefford,  the former name of this village which is 4 miles from Lambourn.

Berkshire Lookup Requests / Re: Surname of Bailey & Pounds

One of Newbury's most illustrious sons is a BAILEY - the astronomer Francis BAILEY. There is a book on his family by LG Horton-Smith an industrious researcher back in the 1920s-1950s.

The family is (as far as I can recall) from Thatcham, Newbury and Speen.

But his name is actually spelled BAILY, and there does not appear to be any connection.

Berkshire / Re: BAILEYS - Chadllesworth Berkshire.

I have just registered with Rootschat and posted the following in reply to your enquiry of June 2006 before I discovered this more recent one.

I am researching the Baileys of Shaw, Chieveley, Abingdon and East Hendred, who are my ancestors. I have records dating back to 1752. There does not appear to be any connection with Chaddleworth, but it is only a few miles from Chieveley, so you never know ...
