Hi Mallow

I was at  the Records Office in Lichfield this morning and had a look for your Harriet's baptism - I checked the baptisms at Armitage (which includes Handsacre) for the years between 1820 and 1844.  No sign of Harriet I'm afraid  :( but did find these which may come in useful or might add to the confusion  ::)

22 March 1834, Charles, son of William & Mary Greatrix, Handsacre, Pipe Maker.
20 May 1835, John, son of Edward & Hannah Greatrix, Armitage, Labourer.
25 April 1841, Hannah, daughter of James & Mary Greatorex (the last bit was a bit smudged),
Armitage, Labourer, born 20th March.
25 April 1841, Caroline, daughter of James & Mary Greatorex (again abit smudged), Armitage, Labourer, born Feb 17th.
18 Feb 1843, Charles, son of James & Maria Greatorix, Armitage, labourer, born 3 May 1843.

I've just realised something - the daughters of James & Mary baptised 1841 - I must have missed the year of birth for one of them otherwise the mother would have been giving birth in Feb & March - sorry, will recheck that for you  :-[

Not a lot of help I'm afraid, we may have to widen the search area?  I'm hoping to get back to Armitage soon and have a look round the chapel church yard. I have looked there for some of hubbies and know that there are not a lot of headstones. I would be interested if you find out where the records are for the chapel as it may solve some of hubbies missing rellies.

Let me know if you need anything else checking or verifying.

Crystal.

Hi Mallow

Sorry for the delay in replying, yesterday was OH's birthday so we were out most of the day and the house is now in uproar as Blues have won the cup - OH and family are true blue fans so I'm grabbing a few moments of peace and quiet  ;D

Well, I don't think I have solved your query in fact I may have raised some more  ::)  It was abit wet and windy so only did a quick search but found the following for you:

In loving memory of
Federick Greatrix
Who died March 21 1959
aged 64 yrs

...................................................

In loving memory of
Sarah
the beloved wife of
Robert Greatrix
late of Bromley Lane, Handsacre
who died at Warwick
on 18 December 1901
after a lingering illness
in her 50th year

Also, of the above
Robert Greatrix
who passed away
May 27 1930
in his 79th year

Peace Perfect Peace

................................................

Humm - they are not as early as we wanted but they do show a Greatrix presence in the village and Handsacre and Armitage boundry each other.  You could try tracing these back and seeing if they link up with your Hannah?

Sorry I've not been able to add anything positive to the thread.  I will be visiting Lichfield RO in a few weeks if you would like anything checking there.  Do you have any other info on this family?  Hopefully the weather will be better next time we go to the churchyard and I will be able to have a better look, the churchyard is rather unsteady in places and OH would not let me go slithering around parts of it as it was a bit wet and muddy.  Fingers crossed.

Crystal

PS I will also try and check the Methodist Chapel graves.

Hi Alyson

Not much luck I'm afraid - found a baptism for Elizabeth, daughter of Samuel Chatfield and Hannah, is this the right one?

Their is a marriage for Samuel Chatfield to Hannah Milner on 3 July 1826 at Uttoxeter.  I have looked for Hannah's baptism under Chatfield and Milner but no luck - let me know if I have the wrong surname.  I've also found a burial for Hannah Chatfield at St Mary's, Uttoxeter on 7 Sept 1828 but cannot find anything for Elizabeth  ???  So at the moment it looks like Elizabeth survived but I'll keep looking.

Am I on the right track?

Hi Alyson

I've had a look at this one as well but nothing much appeared - the only possible marriage I could find was a Samuel Chatfield to Elizabeth Till on 13 Nov 1836 in Stoke on Trent  :-\  What do you think, its within the time frame and Uttoxeter and Stoke are within distance of each other.

Will leave you to puzzle on this one  ;D

Hi Mallow

I have been following your thread with interest as I visit the churchyard at Armitage for OH parents grave.  I don't know about you but I always look at names on gravestones as I'm wondering round  ::) and have noticed some that may be of interest to you although I cannot remember for sure if they are Greatrix or Greatorex.  Hopefully, weather and everything else permitting, we will be there on Friday so I will have a look for you if you like?  It may solve your brick wall or may create another  ;D

Hi Simon

I agree, I don't know the area and it is very confusing - I've never known so many pubs with the same name in the same area but all sorted now, thanks for your help anyway.

Hi Bagpuss

Wow, what a find  ;D  I've spoken to dad and described your picture and he says it sounds like the correct one.  It was a Butler's house, had an archway to some large stables/buildings round the back and had that piece at the front that came out onto the pavement and was adjoined by other buildings.  I was unsure of the other photo as it did not have these features but of course the building could have been altered over the years.  When you said it is now newish buildings, I assume it has now been demolished which is a shame.  Many thanks for tracking the photo down I really appreciate your hard work, its nice to see where they lived all of those years ago and I can't wait to show dad.

Regarding the butchers shop - I am sure it was Market Street Tipton, I don't recall a Limerick Passage but that doesn't mean its not correct.  I remember finding a reference to the butchers shop in Kelly's Directory a couple of years ago but I can't find it in my filing system  ::)  will keep looking its bound to turn up.  This bit can get a bit confusing - grandad Cyril's birth name was Moreton, however, his father died when they were living in Hemsworth and the four children were very young.  Great grandmother Sarah (nee Mills born Groveland Tipton) obviously could not cope and the children were brought up by different family members.  Grandad came back to Tipton to Stephen and Sarah Evans (not yet found the family connection) and he took their surname up until he married and then reverted to his birth name of Moreton.  So the butchers shop will be in the name of Stephen Evans.  Stephen was a butcher for many years and I think later had more than one shop and dad seems to remember he diversified to the wholesale side of it later.  I know grandad took over the shop in Tipton for a short while before he moved to the Wagon and Horses.  Stephen must have been successful as they had a large house, Eastwood at Hagley later on - have photo of it.  Just for interest I have attached a photo of grandad with Stephen Evans and the butchers horse and cart  :)

A very grateful Crystal  :)
