Many thanks dobfarm and Ruskie!  Sorry for the delay in replying but I have been away on holiday for a couple of weeks.  Your information, pinpoints where Workhouse Hill was/is.
Dobfarm, I would be interested to know where you obtained the map you posted.  I have scoured the NLS site which, as you probably know, has an extensive offering of old maps, but I could not find Workhouse Hill on any.
Thanks to both once again for your invaluable help.

Thanks for your kind help, Ladyhawk.  I do know of this photo on Leodis.  There is also a general view of the "Troy" area of Horsforth which shows the corn mill at which I believe my great-grandfather and grandfather  worked.  I am hoping that pinpointing where the workhouse building is situated will tell me where Workhouse Hill was/is. I now believe it is probably Troy Hill  - just off Troy Road.
Thanks once again.

Thanks for the information on the website.  I have read it with interest. Unfortunately it does not allow me to pinpoint the exact location.  I probably need to visit Horsforth.
Thanks again

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Horsforth Workhouse Hill

My Great-grandfather, Joseph Bell's address in the 1901 census is 'Workhouse Hill, Horsforth'.  The next enumerated house is 'Troy Grange', which still stands on Troy Road-- which is a hill.  I cannot find Workhouse Hill on modern or older maps.  In former times did Workhouse Hill occupy the upper part of what is now Troy Road?  Does anyone know the location of the workhouse in Horsforth, which I believe is now a private dwelling?  I'm assuming that the road where it stands was once named Workhouse Hill, either officially or unofficially.  I have an old photo of the area and I believe my great-grandfather's house is shown on it.
Thanks for any help.

Derbyshire / Re: George Hodgkinson of Ashover

Hi Marp
Apologies for the delay.  Bulmer's History of Derbyshire of 1895 (on Ashover)  mentions that "The earliest registers were burned by Cromwell's soldiers in 1646"  You can find an extract at www.ashover.org/bulmer1.htm.  The paragraph is a little more than half way down the page.  The rest of the para. has an interesting reference to a George Hodgkinson - though whether it is "our" George or not is a matter for conjecture.

Hello Marp
George Hodgkinson  of Hatch Leys  farm is my 8x great -grandfather through his son Joseph (bpd 1659, Ashover).  I have been informed in the past, but I forget by whom, that some of the early records for that part of Derbyshire were lost/ destroyed and have not pursued looking earlier than 1623  (George's birth).  I have other info. on George but have pressing business right now so will add later.

If you are looking for info. on Wakefield I recommend you try "Wakefield Family History Sharing" website. ( not Wakefield FHS although that may be useful too).  They have a lot of local knowledge.

Roxburghshire / Re: Joseph Bell, Stationmaster, Sprouston

Thank you all for your kindness in replying.  I do have a lot of information about the family back to about 1690 but I am trying to write this down to give to other family members and trying to fill in a little more detail and double-check what I believe to be "facts".  My problem is that there are lots of Bells and quite a few are named Joseph ( even my own grandfather was Joseph).  I had been able to progress the tree as Thomas Joseph ( son of Joseph) was living with his grandmother in  1841 and not his parents.
Kay99 --- I believe you are correct about Joseph in the 1861 census.  "Lois" threw me for a time but it is the correct family.  The information you have given me re. the family in Sprouston is pure gold for me. I am able to cross-reference it with other info. e.g. Joseph and Ann had a daughter, Beatrice Francis b. 1834 in Alnwick, where the family farmed.
Thank you all once again.

Roxburghshire / Joseph Bell, Stationmaster, Sprouston

My 3XGreat-grandfather, Joseph Bell's employment was given as stationmaster on his son's marriage certificate in 1854.  The only reference I can find to a stationmaster of that name is from a death notification entry in the Newcastle Courant  --  "Fri. 29 January 1858.  At Sprouston, on 19th inst. Mr Joseph Bell, stationmaster, Sprouston and formerly farmer at Greensfield, nr. Alnwick "

The family did farm in Northumberland for many years prior to the 1850s, so this could be "my" Joseph Bell.  However it is a common name and I would be grateful if anyone could provide further information on this Joseph Bell.  e.g.  any entries in local newspapers; was he buried at or near Sprouston and if he was, possible cemeteries. Perhaps a Memorial Inscription?    Thank you.
