Kerry / Re: Honoria Larkin and Michael Denis Ahern

Hi Ashley

I`ve been puzzling this connection with Aherns of Tournafulla for quite a while.

Did come across a map of Michael Ahern(Denis) in Griffith Valuations. Will see if I can root it out.

My grandfather always maintained that he was a first cousin of Jack Ahern.

My info though was that Jack father had a son called Dan. No mention of a Dominic and that flumoxed me on your webpage. So maybe a mistake in my family lore?

According to family lore, his father was known as Mick the Crow.

Will pm you with further info in the coming days with further info.

I think www.irishnewsarchive.com is definitely the way to go. From what I can see on the site, its not pay per view, but 10.00 Euro per 24 hours. You can perform as many searches as you want for that 24 hours.

Sounds like an intriguing case-and definitely one to have made headlines.

Curtin Raiser: Thanks very much for that copy of the Tithe Valuations. Not sure if they`re `my` Aherns. Does seem clear from it though that there are two separate individuals owning 30 acres in Tournafulla.

According to family lore my Micky Denis was originally from Athea. It may be that he subsequently married into Larkin property on Tournafulla. The name Michael Ahern(Denis) on Griffiths suggest that he was the son of Denis. there were other Aherns in the parish at the time so they needed some way of distinguishing ones of the same Christian name.

Anastasia Curtin was ` a first cousin of the the Brouders of Aranagh, Monagea, her mother being Anty Brouder from Aranagh" I quote from a family lore document I have handed on to me from the research of my grand uncle. She married a Cahill and they had three sons and three daughters

Brigid(who married a Geany)
William(who lived at Recastella Brosna)
Kate who married Phil O Connell Caherlevoy, and was Bill Phil`s mother
John who lived at Kilanahan Brosna
David who lived in 54 Gerald Griffin St Cork
Mary who married Pat Casey

Mary and Pat Casey had five children. Four of whom are on the national archives Kerry 1911 census:-
Residents of house number 2 in Knocknacrohy (Moynsha, Kerry)
Surname Forename Age Sex
Casey Timothy 40 Male
Casey William 36 Male
Casey Kate 38 Female
Casey Mary 31 Female

and one, Brigid, who married my great grandfather(Micky Denis`s  son) James Ahern. Brigid and James lives in Ahawilk Feohanagh Co Limerick.

Let me know if you  need/have further information

Thanks

Thanks very much for your input Curtin Raiser.

I subscribed to Irish Origins for a time so I`d found the Griffith Valuation records for Michael Ahern(Denis) in their original form and with map outlining his property. Griffith Valuations are now available free on www.askaboutireland.com

According to family lore Michael Denis came from Athea originally so I`m not sure if he had any connection with the other Aherns in Tournafulla at that time.

I haven`t anything on the Tithe Valuations of the 1830s. Mind me asking where you accessed those?

I also have a Curtin in my ancestry too. Anastasia(nee Brouder) Curtin of Stagmount Rockchapel, was my g g g grandmother. Have more informatio on that line if its any use to you.

On the Tournafulla end of things I know my grandfather was a cousin of Jack Ahern(Old IRA) Nancy Ahern who had a shop in the village and Michael Ahern who used to work in a bank.

Thanks for your interest in my search

Check www.brsgenealogy.com. It has BDM records from most counties in Ireland. There are two William Lowrys on it -one for 1847 one for 1849. None for 1848 though. To see any more of these trascripts you have to shell out €5-and even then they may not list names of parents-though most I`ve looked for have.

Might be worth a look.

Also try www.familysearch.org.

Galway / Re: Michael Kelly - where do I look
« on: Saturday 21 June 08 20:04 BST (UK)  »
I noted Irvilloughter is a townland in the parish of Ahascragh Co Galway. Is that correct?

Couldn`t find a Michael Kelly birth for your date on www.brsgenealogy.com. It is worth looking at that site though for BDMs that may prove relevant to your search-just remember to click on Galway East on the map as there`s a separate part of that site dealing with galway west. Also if you wish to view a transcription you`ll have to pay 5 euro-even if the record turns out to be the wrong ancestor.

Griffith Valuations were taken in that part of Ireland in the 1850s. On www.failteromhat.com there are two Michael Kellys for Ahascragh-though not Irvilloughter.

Kelly           Michael                   Cloncannon (Dillon)         Ahascragh     Galway
Kelly           Michael                   Kilglass                    Ahascragh     Galway

The 1901 census on www.leitrim-roscommon.com also shows a Michael Kelly ages 82 (a lot of them guessed their age though) with his wife Bridget and family living in Ahascragh.

Yes, clutching at straws indeed but maybe you`ll find the above websites helpful for your research anyhow.

Hi Christopher,

Thanks for your reply. I`d done a lot of that Griffith`s Valuation research through www.irishorigins.net(subscription needed) Found a lot of 1901 census info on www.leitrim-roscommon.com (yes, lots of East Galway parishes and other parishes in Galway re listed there).

More recently I`ve found records on www.brsgenealogy.com(at a price! €5 per record). Offaly isn`t covered by this site yet and, since that`s where some of my Hogans had strayed I`m hoping this county is listed soon.

Have also followed my Hogans to the US via www.eillisisland.org and Roddens to New Zealand(found excellent links for tracing them through the NZ board on rootschat.

So, in the words of a soon to be former Taoiseach-I`ve a lot done but more to do!

Kerry / Re: Klochbolley ? Brosna
« on: Tuesday 08 April 08 22:04 BST (UK)  »
Thanks, Tom

For that additional information.

The marriage cert I got from GRO was a transcription of the original record. I think it costs less for a photocopy of the original and I would be in a better position to figure out what the place name was meant to be if I`d ordered the photocopy instead.

Oh well, the learning curve is steep in this family history business!

Thanks for that Leprechaun,

I`d thought perhaps that the Kloch part should have been spelt Cloch as there are placenames starting like that, although no sign of one close enough to my Klochbolley.

Looks like Knockboule is a strong possibility. I see it`s mentioned in the Casey Collection too so maybe if I root around there for a bit I may get more information.

Thanks for your help!
