Suffolk Lookup Requests / Re: Exning marriage or banns 1806-1812 William Tilley
« on: Wednesday 11 October 23 20:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Thank you for all the help and suggestions folks. I doubt the original records  I need exist any longer or Familysearch, Ancestry etc would have filmed/digital copies by now. Although the 1861 census states that William was born in Exning I'm not sure that this is correct. My ancestor, his son Thomas was born at Creeksea, Essex. I have a DNA match with a descendant of Joseph so believe I have the right family so far.  I will investigate the  Market Street family further. There is also a family at Great Waltham, Essex that may be a possibilty.
Thanks again, Matriach

Suffolk Lookup Requests / Exning marriage or banns 1806-1812 William Tilley
« on: Tuesday 10 October 23 22:35 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I would be grateful if anyone with access to the parish records of Exning could search for any record of the marriage of William Tilley born Exning 1780 or if these no longer exist possibly the records of baptism for his sons Joseph 1818 or John 1815. In census records their birthplace is recorded as Landwade, Cambs which I understand is/was part of Exning. I am searching for the name of William's spouse.
Thank you, Matriach

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Ethnicity - how far back does it go
« on: Monday 30 January 23 18:30 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks for all this input folks.  I don't think I put my original question very well. I understand the difference between actual DNA matches and the ethnicity that Ancestry believes I have - which alters from time to time as they attract more punters to their pool of "examples". I wondered if 10% was enough to warrant spending time on research - afterall I know to whom the  4-8% of Irish  DNA on my maternal side refers. General opinion seems to indicate probably not.  My biggest problem would be the amount of inbreeding  amongst  a small community.
As previously mentioned I find the best way to sort out good matches that are not to be found on your   family tree is to contact the match (or their shared matches) and hopefully get further insight. It is frustrating if you do not get an answer which is why I always reply to messages and e-mails even if I cannot be very helpful.
Warm regards to you all, Matriach

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Ethnicity - how far back does it go

Hi
Thanks for the replies to my post. I think I'll forget about those Scandinavians and continue with the evidence I find in actual church records (among others). I agree about the frustration of having a close match that has no family tree but wants only to prove their ethnicity - it can be fun though, as when my half Scottish daughter found that she had a Maori second cousin (i.e first cousin to her father). Messaging has shown how that came about......

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Ethnicity - how far back does it go
« on: Saturday 28 January 23 22:44 GMT (UK)  »
I understand that the ethnicity percentages given on Ancestry are within a range, but I do not fully understand their significance in relation to time. I thought I read somewhere that only the DNA from 5 or 6 generations back could be measured with any accuracy, but perhaps I imagined this.
From my paternal side I have inherited 10% Swedish DNA (it was 2% Norwegian and 8% Swedish). Only 2 close matches have more but that is I believe because we are related through both of my paternal grandmothers. Is this amount of DNA relevant to ancestors I could possibly find in church records? With one or two exceptions my paternal ancestors seem to have lived in Sussex or the Hants/Sussex border since the 17C.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Half siblings who do not match with comparable DNA
« on: Saturday 06 November 21 15:46 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone

My daughter has recently tested with a view to knocking down a few brickwalls in her scottish ancestry. She had a couple of matches from New Zealanders, who when contacted turned out to be half siblings(same scottish father). However there was a large difference in the Cm connection (62 and 230) with one described as a 4/6th cousin and the other a 2/3rd cousin. Is there a simple explanation for this?
Another puzzle - Ancestry says her ancestors are from the east coast (Banff and Buchan) - no mention of Ayrshire or the SW area where her father's family have lived since 1798 - and from where the majority of her matches originate.
I realise that the permutations must be great , but strange nevertheless.
Cheers, Matriach

Hi Andy
thank you very much for enhancing my photo - my what an improvement!  I only knew him as an old man of course and didn't realise what a good looker he was.....(although I expect the photographer played his part..)

thanks again, Helen

Thank you all so much. You have greatly improved what was a badly damaged photo. Unfortunately  this old family photo does have rather strange dimensions and was therefore difficult to keep in good condition.

i don't know how you do it but I'm so glad that you can! Thank you all.

This is a photograph of my grandfather that I have recently inherited following the death of a cousin.
Harry joined the Ox & Bucks Light Infantry in 1896 but transferred to the Hampshire Regiment in 1903. He landed from HMS Clyde during the Gallipoli campaign and after being posted missing believed dead was found on the beach alive with bullet wounds.
i would be grateful for any improvement.
Thank you so much, Helen McClintock
