Sorry for delay in replying - the person in the Glasgow & West Scotland family history society is Gina Fisher. If you contact the society by e mail and leave a message for her attention it should reach her as she does some voluntary work in the office occassionally.  She passed me the information re the relationships you ask about and will be able to clarify how she came to that conclusion.

I have some information on the above family.  William was dead prior to 1853 when Esther Porterfield claimed poor relief in Glasgow and described herself as a Wdow residing at 559 Gallowgate in Glasgow.
Her eldest daughter Margaret was described as aged 2o Married with one child and living in Edinburgh.

A member of the the Glasgow and West of Scotland Family History Society gave me information on this family - and i have included a part of the letter for you information.

"First is William Lawrie/Laurie/Lowrie/Lowry (I kid you not, they’re all the one person) who married Esther/Easter Porter/Potterfield/Porterfield (Yes, you’ve guessed it, they’re all the one woman) in Neilston in 1831.  He died about 1853 and she in 1896.  Their children were Margaret, Frances, Robert, Rebecca and David, not all of whom reached adulthood.

Secondly, Andrew Lawrie etc etc m to Margaret Beattie, both of whom are about 71 in the 1851 census (Glasgow, Bridgton, I think- I can’t quite put my hand on the census sheet at this minute.)

William and Andrew are, I believe, the brother and father respectively, of Rebecca Lawrie who married James Stafford in 1832."

Hope this proves useful

Robert
