Ireland / Re: Born in Workhouse
« on: Monday 26 May 08 00:03 BST (UK)  »
Most Workhouses throughout Ireland also housed the local hospital so its quite possible that the birth occured there. I have known many cases where a child was born "in the Workhouse" when the family had a perfectly good home! Most probably because the birth was a difficult one or there were problems with the pregnancy.

This also applied to deaths "in the Workhouse" - especially in the later years of the 19th Century. This reference does not necessarily mean that the person had fallen on hard times and was a pauper.

Records are available for most Poor Law Unions and these usually contain records of the Workhouse for the particular PLU. Some records are better than others though!!

Hope this helps!

Hi

There are Newsams still in Maghera Parish (Ballyginny townland) on the 1901 Census. They run the Post Office. If you go to
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~meaneypj/Co_Down_Stuff/1901_Census/1901_Census_Maghera_Parish/ballyginny_1901_census.htm

No.15 is the family.

Hope this helps!

Hello Kate

I think the marriage took place in St. Matthews RC Church - this is Belfast Urban 11 and it is on the corner of Seaforde Street. It is very much still there also!
