Australia / Re: How many Samuel CHAPMANs in South Australia?
« on: Thursday 19 January 12 21:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Rhonda May,

The Samuel Chapman that you mentioned who arrived on the Epaminodas 2Aug 1852 with Eliza Gorman is my ancestor. I've been looking for a record of their arrival for sometime, so thanks very much.  Do you have another document which lists Eliza's maiden name as Gorman?

Their first child in South Australia was a daughter born 3 Nov 1852 called Margaret Ann which fits.

Hi Narelle,

I have a g g grandfather Samuel Chapman in South Australia.  He had 12 children with Eliza Gormin/Gorman, though I've found no marriage record for them yet.

Confirming when and how he arrived, finding his parents, birth etc has been a dead end so far so I recently started researching all the Samuel Chapmans in South Australia to see  if I could figure out something by a process of elimination.  I've been collecting bmd and newspaper cuttings from Trove. I haven't had time to organise it all yet beyond identifying mine. Two Samuel Chapmans seem to have stayed in Adelaide, two moved north to the Claire district.  One seems to have stayed in Lochiel, north of Pt Wakefield and died there.  The other (my Samuel) moved much further north eventually north Orroroo where the family ended up.

The interesting connection is that my Samuel Chapman had a child with Eliza Gormin born 3 Nov 1852 then no children until 1 May 1856. After that there is one every couple of years.  That is the time period when you think Samuel went back to England.

The Samuel that married Caroline Neville with father Joshiah that Karenlee posted is the other one that moved north of Adelaide. This is his death notice.

Samuel Chapman - "Death 7 Nov 1878, aged 49, of heart disease, at Lochiel, beloved wife of Caroline Chapman."  (Lochiel is north of Pt Wakefield.)

Australia Death Index, 1787-1985
Name: Samuel Chapman
Death Date: 7 Nov 1878
Death Place: Lochiel
Age: 49
Residence Place: Lochiel
Registration Place: Clare, South Australia
Page Number: 96
Volume Number: 91
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1829

I'm happy to pass on the other bits and pieces I've found but they are a bit of a jumble at the moment.

Best wishes,
Susan

Lancashire / Pescot - Nutgrove
« on: Monday 14 April 08 18:58 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know anything about the history of the estate called Nutgrove which is now a suburb of Prescot. At some point it was the home of the Nuttall family and my Whitfield family farmed their land. I would like to locate the Nuttal family records or manorial records for the period around 1800 to fill in some gaps in the family story.  Is anyone researching Nutgrove/Nuttalls or Whitfields in the area?

Any leads would be very welcome.

Do you happen to know anything about the Tontine Street Weslyan Church
in St Helens. I think is was on the site that is now the main shopping centre.

Thanks CaroleW,
They were very creative with the spelling weren't they. The Voise family in 1841 are mine. I was confused when I first found it but then had a stroke of luck. In 1851 there are lodgers living with them and one of them with his name spelt wrongly is William Smedley who is Sarah's nephew.

Thanks for all the details and Sarah's death which I didn't have.

The only Esther Vose on the 1841 census was living in Bolton Le Moors

She was b 1816 and there was a John Vose b 1811 and Thomas b 1839

She is not on the 1851

There is a George Voce aged 24 living in Liverpool in 1841 but no sign of a wife

1841 Eldon Place Liverpool

George Voise 28 Engineer - not b Lancs
Sarah 25 not b Lancs
William 6
Henry 4

1851 - looks like 1 Great Crosshall Street Liverpool

Sarah Vose 36 widow - lodging house keeper b Sutton Lancs
Henry son 14 b Liverpool
Thomas Whitfield father widower 69 b Hale Lancs - retired farmer
Plus a number of lodgers

1861 - same address but just Sarah & Henry.  Henry's occupation is Letter Carrier - Liverpool Post Office

1871 - 34 Byles St - just Sarah & Henry

1881 - 12 Fairview Place - just Sarah & Henry

1881 - 12 Fairview Place - addition of Annie Dixon - widow aged 54 - servant

Deaths - Sarah Vose 78 June qtr 1891   Toxteth Park
Volume: 8b Page: 211

In 1901 Henry is still at Fairview Place with Annie Dixon

Thanks feralcat.
Sarah's brother lived in Runcorn so this is very likely my Sarah. I'll follow it up.
