It does seem to be a big coincidence doesn't it DS? and definitely a possibility.

I don't know that I'll ever be absolutely sure on this one

Thanks for looking

Barbara

I'm sure I posted a reply earlier saying thank you to Casalguidi and Arranroots.  It doesn't seem to be there now :-\

Thank you all for the quick responses, I've acted on your suggestions as you can see :)

This looks like it could be John's family (before he married).

1851

Bourn Corby HO107/2095 Folio 74 Page 6

William Archer Head M 39 Ag Lab Lincolnshire Swayfield
Ann do Wife M 37 Lincolnshire Swayfield
Lois do Daur 13 Lincolnshire Swayfield
Thomas do Son 11 Lincolnshire Swayfield
Anne do Daur 10 Lincolnshire Swayfield
William do Son 8 Lincolnshire Swayfield
John do Son 6 Lincolnshire Swayfield
Mary do Daur 4 Lincolnshire Swayfield
Sarah do Daur 2 Lincolnshire Swayfield

Note
There is another John Archer born Swayfield with birth dates ranging from 1845 to 1847 on the censuses with parents Thomas and Ann. He still appears with his mother on the 1881 census, unmarried, and cannot therefore be the one who married Mary Robinson. Whereas the John shown above is not with his parents in 1871 or 1881 and could, therefore, be the one who married Mary. (He is not with his parents in 1861 either). Need to check in other ways to be certain.

Hope no one minds me resurrecting this thread :)

My partner is descended from Thomas Archer age 11 in the above transcript.

While investigating the family I discovered that Lois had two illegitimate children, the younger being born in Bourne Workhouse.

What is intriguing me though is that she is listed as Lois Archer until 1881, but in 1891 and 1901 she is listed as Lois Crow widow (confirmed by children's names and ages).   I can't see a marriage for her to a Mr Crow (other people have looked as well).

If anyone has any information as to how she became "Mrs" Crow I'd be very grateful for the information.

This may not be the right place to ask but

I came across a post dated January asking for a lookup on my OH's direct line.

Rather than resurrect the thread I pm'd the poster about a month ago asking if they had any more info as I have come across a bit of a puzzle relating to someone mentioned in the query but had no response.

Do I assume that member is no longer on site, or am I just impatient?

Thanks

Thank you very much for that Grant ;D.

There are a couple of pieces of information there which I wasn't aware of, including the parents address at the time and the fact that it took the poor boy a couple of days to die.

Tile Sheds does make sense as an address.  The pit was both a coal mine and a clay pit, with a brickworks attached.  The pit had originally been opened by a firm called Carr's - hence the local name of Carr's pit.

Another interesting little snippet is that he was attended by Dr Dewar.  James sister moved to Nottinghamshire about 20 years later, and the family doctor after the move was Dr Dewar.  As there were quite a few Newcastle doctors who moved to the area I wonder if it was the same one?  Something else for me to look into.

Thank you very much for the offer Cass. :)

I've been told elsewhere that the newspaper collection is temporarily housed at the Civic Centre, while the refurbishment is taking place.   I have assumed that the information is correct.

I have had a PM from someone offering to have a look for me, so please don't spend any time on my behalf.

£50 could well be cheaper than the train fare ;D

I'll have to put it on hold until later in the summer before I could even think about going myself though.

Perhaps some kind soul might offer.  I can hope :)

Thanks for your input
