Hi JSAK

Thank you for your message. Our families must have known each other! Sadly I don't recognise the names you mention or the people in your photo, and there is no one left in my family from that time now to help.

I hope that one day I'll find out who the women in my photo are. Good luck with your research.

With very best wishes

Hi Gordon,

This info may be of interest though it's probably not your direct Curry line.

William Armstrong (1783-1858), son of the John Armstrong of Park House that you mention in your previous posting, married Ann Curry on 7 Jan 1804 in Hexham. I haven't investigated Ann's parental background, but since Park House and Stobbylee were close, she may well be related to your Currys.

By 1826 William and Ann had moved to Riddlehamhope. Ann died in 1847.

Mandry was an alternative Welsh form of Mainwaring which was used during this period. Several of my family switched from Mainwarings to Mandry and back to Mainwaring again.

It's possible that the enumerator in the 1871 census made a mistake and that David Mandy was David Mandry!

Hi Orielbenfro,

Thanks for your input. I agree with you that caution is always necessary.

I'm sorry to disagree with you about the use of patronyms in Pembrokeshire post 1725.

The baptism records of my Watts family from Manordeifi from 1799-1812 show the use of both the patronymic and family surnames. I.e. John Watts' children, Hannah (1799), Rachael (1801), Mary (1806), Ebenezer (1808) and Martha (1812) all have the second name John, not Watts, in the IGI extracted christening records for the locality. However I gather from another researcher that the family name Watts has been used in other sources.

Caution must always be used, but given Bethan's description of the problem, I think that the use of patronyms in this instance may be a possibility.

Hi Bethan,

I think that the reason may be that at that time many people did not have family surnames as we have now, but used patronyms - the first name of their father - as their second name.

So Mary was given her father's first name to become Mary David - i.e. Mary, daughter of David. In England names such as David-son, John-son and Richard-son reflect this system, but Wales retained the patronymic for longer.

For a while the patronymic and the family name system seem to have co-existed before family surnames predominated.

Dear Osprey

Thank you very much for the clarification and for the leads you have given. Fingers crossed, this information will also help me to track down Edward's baptism record and parentage too.

With thanks again and very best wishes

Dear Osprey

Thank you very much indeed for this. I've been stuck on the early life and parentage of Edward Mainwaring for a long time and the information you've given about Llangennech provides a new lead to follow. Until now the only information I had about his origins came from the 1851 census, which gives Llannon as his birthplace.

Does the marriage entry give any other details - the church, witnesses etc.? My Mainwaring branch has proved very elusive so any evidence that might help trace them would be most welcome.

With many thanks again

Moni

date of the marriage is right, but it's the following year - 1816, Edward being of Llangennech & recorded as Mainwaring.

Carmarthenshire Lookup Requests / LLLannon Marriage Registers - Mainwaring

Hi Cas and anyone else who can help

I'd be very grateful for any information about the marriage of  Edward Mainwaring/Manwaring/Mandry/Manry, who married Mary prior to 1821 when their son Thomas was born in Brynteg, Llannon.

According to a member-submitted record on the LDS International Genealogical Index (which can be unreliable!) there is a marriage of Edward Manwaring to Mary Williams in Llannon on 16 May 1815. However I can't find this listed in the Dyfed Marriage Index on Free Genealogy Online. The Dyfed Index lists a marriage of Edward Mainwaring to Mary Owen in Llanedi in 1813, but I think that these are not mine.

My Edward Mainwaring was born c1788 and Mary c1799, both in Llannon. They lived at Brynteg near Tumble, and were non-conformist by religion.

Any help would be much appreciated.

With thanks and best wishes
