Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Re: Census Help - Arthur Mordaunt Wilson
« on: Sunday 04 November 18 08:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Magrat, Sorry that much time has elapsed since your post, and you might have solved your problem by now. But I wonder if you are aware of this notice in the personal columns of Sydney Morning Herald (NSW Australia):
"ARTHUR MORDAUNT WILSON, a young man lately patient in the Prince Alfred Hospital.- Please call on the General Secretary of the Young Men's Christian Association, Sydney. Letters of importance from home waiting."  [SMH Wednesday 6 February 1884].
I hope this is helpful.

One Name Studies: N to S / Re: Purnell Family
« on: Thursday 12 July 07 08:53 BST (UK)  »
Good to see there are other people interested in the Purnell family!

I have been trying to learn more about the ancestry of a Mary Caroline Lucy Purnell who married a Robert Pitkethley in Sydney, Australia in 1885.  She was commonly known as Lucy, and was the daughter of Charles Henry Purnell and Sarah Ann Clegg.  Charles and Sarah were married at Newington, Surrey in 1837 and lived ar Southwark, Surrey before emigrating to New Zealand some time before 1858 when Lucy was born.

Charles was not born in Surrey, according to the 1841 census.  I wonder if he might have been one of the Gloucestershire Purnells?

I have found two other Purnell families living in Surrey around the same time.  I suspect these families are related to each other, but no evidence yet.

Does anyone have any knowledge of, or interest in, the Surrey and the New Zealand Purnells?  I will be glad to share what I have.

Technical Help / Re: Help computer taking too long to load.
« on: Sunday 18 March 07 08:02 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Carol

Do you do regular cleanups of your hard disk (c: drive)?  Disk Cleanup helps free up space on your hard drive. Disk Cleanup searches your drive, and then shows you temporary files, Internet cache files, and unnecessary program files that you can safely delete. You can direct Disk Cleanup to delete some or all of those files.

To open Disk Cleanup, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to
System Tools, and then click Disk Cleanup.

You should do this every few days.  If you already do it, then I can't think of anything else that might speed up your computer.

Thanks Caz, that's beautiful.  And also thanks to Jim and Tomkin.  I never thought it would be possible considering what you had to start with :)

To answer Linda's question: the father is Alexander Brown, born abt 1800 in Ayrshire, died 1872 in Glasgow.  His parents were James Brown and Margaret (nee Pollock).  Alexander's wife was Agnes Pitkethley, born 1805 Forgandenny, Perthshire, died 1874 St Mary, Dundee.  (Agnes was the elder sister of my 3x great grandfather George Pitkethley 1816-1880).  I'm not aware of any Irish connection, unless James or Margaret had an Irish connection.

Cheers

Occupation Interests / Re: Bast closer?
« on: Tuesday 13 March 07 02:03 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks for your comments.  I agree that either 'last closer' or 'boot closer' would make more sense.  Although I don't know what the 'closer' part refers to.

Unfortunately the image is not available with the 1851 Scotland census, so we can't see what the writing looked like.

By the way, I did a search for 'bast', and there is such a word, apparently it is a fibrous mat that comes from beneath the bark of certain trees.  And it was used to make very inferior quality shoes in ancient times, but almost certainly not in C19.  So I agree with the 'last' or 'boot'.

Cheers

I thought there was something funny about those spots on poor Agnes' dress, but it didn't dawn on me that they had been put there later.  But now you mention it, I agree.  And the spots aren't even done very well.  Same with the other touch ups.  All rather crude.

Sadly, the lady who sent me that photo over 10 years ago has since passed away, so I can't even ask her about it.

Thanks to all of you for your improvements and comments.  Very much appreciated!

Thanks again Jim.  I think you did a great job re-building Jessie's face, it looks pretty faithful to the original (what one can see of it) and features are consistent with the other family members.

And thanks to the other contributors for the comments re date etc.

By the way, I don't know where the red dot came from.  I had intended to erase it before posting the photo, but forgot.  Oops!
