Your comments about the photos got me thinking about who might be famous enough to have started a trend in wedding poses.  There are photos on a website with info on Queen Mary (wife George V 1893) from the late 1890s and early 1900s that show a similar pose in repose by several royal brides of that time period:

Our ancestors were obviously trying to be very fashionable in their poses!

Hi Sue,

The woman in the photo is my grandmother, Ivy Mary Powell, who married my grandfather, William Thomas Gelston, in 1907 In Tasmania.  We believe the photo is a wedding photo, probably taken at home. I imagine it was taken in the style at the time. The pose is a bit unusual, compared to other time periods.  There's probably a royal person of that time who posed in such a way and started a trend!

William was one of the two orphaned children mentioned in the will.  Ivy had also lost her parents at a young age and was raised by a relative's family. She was fortunate that she was raised in a very loving household, as if she were one of their own children. She and her siblings were also separated and raised by different families, and in different towns, so I imagine it was considered acceptable at the time. In her case, after her mother died, the father abandoned his children and moved away to find work. Hard to understand how someone could leave 3 children like that, but he probably thought it was for the best.

Cheers.

Monica

Thanks for the information and link, Jenn.  Christmas came early at our house!  I found the probate and will that proves the death of my great great grandfather, William Gelston, and also seems to prove the family story that he entrusted the care of his two children to a family friend, who then took the money from the will and farmed off the children to different families! Very interesting.  Thank you and Merry Christmas!

I forgot to include that the only birth that clearly states Margaret Cashman as the mother is Eliza b. 1854 Victoria. I thought the rest are likely for this couple when one of the children christened at Illawarra had the name Bartholomew!

Hi Debra,

No luck with Lewis, but I did find the following info, in case you don't have access to these CDs:

Death: Timothy Foley, son of Timothy Foley and Elizabeth Aheran, died 1859, aged 24, born Cork, death registered Victoria 1859/244.
[LDS Australian Vital Records Index]

Death: Timothy Foley, aged 41, died 1873, parents Louis and Ann Foley, born "Lime" (Limerick?), death registered Victoria 1873/3205.
[LDS Australian Vital Records Index]

Death: Ann Foley, daur of Timothy Foley and Elizabeth Ahern, died 1855, aged 24, born Cork, death registered Victoria 1855/2450.
[LDS Australian Vital Records Index]

Marriage: Mary Foley, aged 27, married Bartholomew Cashman, aged 38, 18 Jan 1854 in Tasmania, 1854/998.
[LDS Australian Vital Records Index] The Tasmanian Pioneer Index says they were married in Launceston 998/1854 RGD37.

Denis Foley, aged 35, died 4 Oct 1853 at Tasmania, 1853/133.
[LDS Australian Vital Records Index] The Tasmanian Pioneer Index says he died Westbury 133/1853 RGD35.

There appear to have been three or four couples in Tasmania with families with the last name Foley.  The names Timothy and Denis appear mostly in Victoria Foleys however (just a quick observation of mine, not scientific fact, so you will have to check yourself).

Hope something there helps.  Good luck with your research.

Hmm their website still says $12.

Agree about the service from Manitoba Vital Stats- I have received better service from many other offices around the world (can't think of one offhand that is so slow).  However, I have always received what I requested.  I was a bit miffed they cashed my cheque right away and then made me wait 8 weeks though! When I called at the 8 week mark, the woman said it could take another month, but I received my requests the week after that.

Another source to try if you are near a Canadian public library is the Henderson directories.  I find them very helpful in locating people after 1911 and tracking their movements.  She and Robert may not be in there if they stayed in rural areas though.

Perhaps a research request to the Manitoba Genealogical Society might help.  They have cemetery indexes and obituary indexes, that sort of thing, that may be helpful to you.

Not sure why they take so long... I get info from Australia more quickly than Manitoba!

There were only a small number of other Crumps listed in the Manitoba database.  It is also worth checking other western provinces, as Winnipeg was the gateway all immigrants went through to the west.  Many people stayed briefly in Wpg and then moved on.

I checked ancestry.com for Eliza and Elizabeth Crump and Robert Crump and variations of the last name.  There are no interesting entries after 1911 in western Canada that match info you have provided. I thought there might be a border crossing record somewhere, as people travelled back and forth from Wpg to the US and Vancouver to Seattle.

Possible death registration for Elizabeth Crump in Manitoba on the Vital Statistics website:

Elizabeth Harr Crump died Aug 7, 1926, aged 54 . Death registered in Virden, Manitoba. Reg no. 1926 - 038049.

Copies are $12 from Vital Statistics.  They take ages to process requests though, even when it's just a photocopy needed and all other info provided (last request I made took over 2 months to receive).
