Kent / Re: 22 Broadwater Down, Tunbridge Wells

Hello.  I have been doing some research on this address as it features on my father's birth certificate.

It was always a mystery as to why he was born in Tunbridge Wells as his mother lived in Canterbury.  Being born in 1943, he was told that it was 'because of the war' and it was left at that.

I have since discovered that my grandmother was married to someone else when my father was born, and she didn't divorce her first husband and marry my Dad's biological father until 1946.

Dad was completely unaware of the back story until recently, but it solved the mystery.

There was a college which closed down in the 1990s in Ashford, on Elwick Road in the centre of the town. It was called South Kent College at the time (ie 1991) and was a very formidible looking victorian building. It also had a house in the grounds which became an office in the latter days.

The whole building is currently awaiting demolition, I think.

Thanks for the suggestion, but there were no relatives in Tunbridge Wells at the time.

Although both towns are in Kent, it's about one-and-a-half hours' drive - even today!

Kent / Broadwater Down, Tunbridge Wells
« on: Friday 05 January 07 19:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, thanks for reading this.

My father was born at 22 Broadwater Down, Tunbridge Wells during WW2.

I find this strange as the family home was in Canterbury. Does anyone have an idea what this facility was?

I do know that my grandmother was not married to my grandfather when my father was born.

Thanks
