The Common Room / Re: 1939 Register Note

Suggest it may be the date of the amendment.

I just checked my mother's entry.  She was single in 1939, but her married name has been recorded later, along with the date of the marriage.

The famous band is the Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Band (not Raistrick)

I have 16 generations. No-one famous, but pretty sure it's accurate.

There appears to be a blocked out window.

Window tax was introduced in England and Wales in 1696. It was repealed in 1851. Suggests the building was built before 1851.

The Common Room / Re: Taking a secod name?

I have always been known by my second name.  One exception that I remember was my first manager when I started work.  Someone kindly pointed out his error - I would have never dared to say anything!

Like Gillg, I warned the hospital when I went in for surgery some years ago to use my second name.  These days I have so many appointments, that I am getting quite used to being called by my first name by those who do not know me.

Thank you for your many and varied responses to my original posting. Pleased that so many have happy memories to share.

I am grateful to so many who have helped me with my brick walls - some of which still seem to be permanent.

FS.
