Excerpt from NEWLYN - A VIEW FROM STREET-AN-NOWAN by John Cecil Jenkin

Just read this piece this morning...

"...and around 1829, Charles KELYNACK, grandson of Old Bunger who rescued Wesley from a hostile crowd, persuaded Newlyn fishermen to fish for herrings in Irish waters, beginning in July after the mackerel season. By 1838 some 100 boats took part regularly."

There's also a famous painting by Stanhope Forbes called Off To Skibbereen which shows a boat setting sail from Newlyn. Skibbereen is on the coast of County Cork, if I remember correctly.

I just noticed that this doesn't really tie in with your dates, but I'll leave the info on here anyhow.

Cornwall / Re: cemeteries in Penzance and Hayle

There's also a churchyard at Madron (which used to be the main church for Penzance) which also has an 'overspill' graveyard further along the main road through Madron. It's about a mile and a half from the Heamoor cemetery.

There are also three cemeteries at Paul (more for Mousehole and Newlyn deaths but there will be Penzance people in there). Small one at Crowlas on the A30 into Penzance. Ludgvan and Gulval churchyards are both within a couple of miles of PZ.

Another Cruzelier I came across in my own search is "John Richards at Paul married Frances Cruzelier also in 1726".

Cornwall / Re: Little Cambridge near Portreath - location?

Just an idea but if the name Cambridge has been transcribed,; could it have been transcribed wrongly? There is a place a few miles inland from Portreath called Cambrose. I haven't looked myself if there is (was) a Little Cambrose but it might be worth a look.

Sadly cannot find anything about the parish of Lansallos

You obviously haven't made contact with the Polperro Family History Society which covers the two parishes of Lansallos and Talland that include and surround the village of Polperro.

Not much they don't know about Lansallos...

Cornwall / Re: Truro newspapers

The West Briton based at Truro (also with regional issues for Camborne/Redruth, Falmouth and Helston) is your best bet as it is the most read newspaper in West Cornwall. The Cornishman is run by the same company but is more for the Penzance/St Ives and Scilly Isles.

The Packet series of papers are free papers more for classifieds etc.

Cornwall / Re: Which house number?

Probably one of my colleagues, I haven't done the open top route for about a month now. That turn isn't meant for double-deckers. Last year the council employed a traffic manager to patrol that corner and 'facilitate traffic movement' - no sign of him this year...cutbacks I expect.

Hope you had a nice week. Stunning place...and the view from the bus station is magnificent. ;)

Not going to be much help to you but Tregenna Hill is all shops these days. see picture here...
 http://www.cornwallpictures.co.uk/html_st_ives/36.htm

Both sides of the road as far as the library where it becomes Tregenna Place. The library is the building with the tower on the corner.

I have to drive down it with a double decker bus every now and again ;-)
