Australia / Re: Help with passenger lists please.

There are about a dozen entries for the passenger name John James born 1852 on the site www.findmypast.com.   I've copied the entry for one going to Rockhampton in 1911 but I'm not sure it's much help.   I'll try sending it with this but I've not done this before so hope it works.  He's listed as English and a railway worker, as are most on that page.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: 1891 Census Look Up Please
« on: Sunday 01 November 09 18:12 GMT (UK)  »
May be a wild goose chase but on 1891 Census there's a Thomas Read b 1841 Cook birthplace Not known with wife Mary b 1851 Fleetwood, Lancs., and son Robert b 1876 Fleetwood all residing 273 City Road, Hulme, Manchester RG12 3194 folio 94 p.22.     There are several Margarets b 1879 elsewhere - including one shown as Sister (scholar) to head of house Robert Reid (single) age 23 b.Glasgow with several other 'brothers and sisters'.    Maybe it's stretching things too far but Margaret could have been away from parents' home and the 'Mary' above could have taken that name if she didn't like Ellen; Mary Ellen was quite popular then I think.  Hope I haven't put you off track.

The Thomas Reed I found was shown as Married and born in Manchester.      I'll check all the other Thomas Reeds on the Census later and if any of them are born 1841 and Manchester but were elsewhere at the time of the Census, I'll get back to you.    If you don't hear back from me, he'll be the only one.    I'd also looked for Nell Reed b.1857 without success (my grandmother was a Sarah Ellen but known as Nell)!

There's a Thomas Reed b 1841 at 13 Heywoods Terr.,Crumpsall RG12 3265 Folio 112 p 23  Labourer at the home of Henry and Mary Rhodes.   Couldn't find an Ellen Reed b.1857.  The only Margaret I got was a Margaret G.Reed b 1879 - shown as a Daughter - in home of Hannah Reed (Widow b 1846 in Salford) in Gortley, Lancs., with several other sons and daughters...  The latter doesn't sound very useful but might lead to a connection.

Any help?

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Fretwell in Penistone
« on: Tuesday 06 January 09 21:18 GMT (UK)  »
Advice please on finding information about the Fretwell family of West Yorkshire - specifically John Fretwell (according to LDS) christened 10 February 1744 in Penistone.  I've hit a brick wall with my ancestor John Fretwell who married in Barford, Warwickshire in April 1773 but no trace of him in Warwickshire prior to that.  He was a weaver, as was his eldest son, Thomas.  According to the information re his death and burial in Barford in 1820, he was born in 1744.   There seem to be many Fretwells in Yorkshire and Derbyshire but by elimination, I'm left with John of Penistone as being 'most likely'.    All suggestions welcomed as my research has to be done long distance from British Columbia, Canada.

Thanks Revlac.   The Mills Archive is one I've signed up for so it's great to have your suggestion -- Not having been familiar with the area when I lived in England,  I'm learning a lot about Suffolk/Norfolk geography and history now I'm trying to trace my Mannalls!

Thanks again for those links.   I've had a quick look and have signed up on one and plan to look at them more closely once our Thanksgiving (this weekend) is over and the family's all gone home again - well stuffed!! (Turkey and family!)

My George Mannall is at Mill Hill, Woodbridge, in the 1841 Census, then in Debach (occupation Miller) for the 1861 Census.   I believe they were based in Debach for quite a while as GGrandmother was married from there in 1868.  'My' George's father is in Brandeston as an Ag Lab on the 1841 Census.  I believe George had a brother John, born 1819 in Sudbourn but whether he is the Miller you refer to I don't know for sure.   Another brother, James was born in 1825 and William in 1826... all in Sudbourne. Unfortunately they weren't too imaginative and repeatedly christened boys George, James and John so they're a bit hard to sort out.

I don't have anything relating to the names Keen or Markin but will keep you posted if I find a link.  Thanks again for all your information.

My ancestor, George Mannall died in and is buried at Charsfield (1890) so my guess is that's the area he worked. His daughter, Mary Ann, is my Great-Grandmother.  I haven't looked at them for a while so I'll check and get back with more detail.    Some of the other places members of this Mannall family lived were Friston, Kelsale and Iken.   Thank you for starting this thread.

Interesting site.  Can you recommend any photos of the Sudbourne area.   Our family tree includes George Mannall who married Sarah Lambert in 1840 in Woodbridge.   He is described as Grain Farmer and Miller in Sudbourne and she was from Grundisburgh.    May be myth but the story has come down that the family thought mechanization was the work of the Devil - they preferred to rely on natural elements such as wind and water power... so they lost out to modernization!
