Armed Forces / Re: What was wrong with Hulme Barracks, Manchester?
« on: Sunday 03 August 08 14:57 BST (UK)  »
My gggrandmother Olive Syncock ( Simcock) married Lawrence Anthony 5th Dragoon guards in Manchester Collegiate Church ( now the Cathedral) in Feb1835. Lawrence died 1837 and Olive then married my gggrandfather also a soldier in 5th Dragoon Guards. They were married Feb 1838 again in Manchester Collegiate Church. At the time of her second marriage  they were living 39 Queen Street Hulme.
As the 5th Dragoon guards were a cavalry regiment, I presume both her husbands were stationed at Hulme Barracks.
Both of her marriages were in Manchester Cathedral, who were very helpful in helping to search for the 1835 marriage certificate.
I cannot find the family anywhere in 1841 census.
does anyone know where the regiment was in 1841 if not in Manchester.
Angela.

Thanks for your reply.
No I am researching the name of Riley???? Not sure how I ended up on an  "English" site.
I was looking for another researcher who has been trying to find my gggrandparents, Andrew and Olive Reilly/Riley, who are living in Newcastle on Tyne abt 1840-70. I have a lot of information on them.

Thank you so much. It is Olive Simcock that I am looking for.
I had wondered that if her birth was around 1815 then Hannah could not be her mother as she would be too old. Olive names Richard Simcock as her father on both her marriage certificates.Lettice was the daughter of Richard and Hannah Simcock, so Richard was her grandfather. It looks like her grandparents may have brought her up.
Letitia was my mothers name ( born 1910)and every generation of Olive Simcocks descendents  has had at least one and sometimes 2 Letties or Letitias in it. I was surprised that she had named none of her daughters after Hannah - her supposed mother.
I am so delighted you have found this.
She ran away with a soldier ( Lawrence Anthony)and seems to have had no further contact with her relatives in Caverswall. They married in 1835 in Manchester, and had a daughter, Eliza. She was widowed and then married my Gggrandfather Andrew Reilly in 1838. According to family tales her Caverswall family were advertising in the Northern newspapers for information as to her whereabouts, and this link had some connection with the pottery industry.I could not find any connection with the pottery industry at all as Richard was a farmer. I found Lettice about 6 weeks ago ( sibling so I thought). Lettice Simcock and her subsequent family lived in Fenton & worked in the pottery industry.
Thank you all for your help,
Angela.

Thank you for replies.I have just picked them up as I have been away.
I think Richard and Hannah may be her parents....but no birth/christening record in Caverswall can be found. She may of course have been born in another parish, or they just didn't register her!
I have contradictory evidence of her birth date - 1807/8 ( death cert) 1815 ( census records) just to complicate things.
Thank you for these suggestions - they could be siblings. Some christian names match up with her own childrens names.Eliza, Elizabeth, Richard...but no Hannah.

Andrew and Olive Riley nee Simcock are my gggrandparents.
Olive born 1807-15 Caverswall Staffs...no birth/baptism record as yet found. Fathers name Richard Simcock.
Her Son Joseph born and dies in Caverswall oct (?) in1833.
1835 Olive marries her first husband Lawrence Anthony ( widower)in Manchester. Eliza their daughter is born in Edinburgh 1836. Lawrence dies ( date unknown to me). Olive marries her 2nd husband Andrew Reilly in 1838 in Manchester. Andrew is a soldier in 5th Dragoon Guards. After his discharge from the army in 1846 at York barracks they go to live in Gateshead/Newcastle until Olives death in 1867 from typhoid. Andrew moves to Stockton on Tees where their daughter Letitia Riley/Darragh ( my ggrandmother)and their son Thomas are living.
Andrew dies in jan 1881 in Stockton.
I have more information regarding their family if required. I too have been unable to find them on 1841 census. I have the movements of his regiment at this time and he could be anywhere in the midlands or north. One regiment has been sent to Ireland so who knows??
