« on: Wednesday 17 January 07 21:21 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for information on a pupil who attended a "School of Art"  in Halifax, and on completion, was presented with a Certificate
"By Order of the Lords of the Committee of Privy Council on Education, 1875"
Would there be any records anywhere ??
Where would I look ??

TIA,
Gordon.

'ello Debbie,

My copy of IGI gives two marriages of Jacob BAIRSTOW at Halifax on 27 Nov 1826, one to Sarah GARTH, and one to Sarah FIRTH - one must be a transcribing error.
The Halifax marriages have been transcribed by the Calderdale (Halifax) FHS, as GARTH, both are from Northowram, Jacob is a Weaver (loads of weavers in Halifax).  No fathers name given in that period.
Looking at the 1851 census, for Halifax there are only 9 GARTH's, about 20 GATH's, but loads of FIRTH's and BAIRSTOW's, so not much to go on here.
I will try to get a look at the original Parish Register, but I expect it will be very difficult to read and decide if it is GARTH, GATH, or FIRTH.

My next door neighbours are COLDWELL's and descended from ancestors in those area's.  However, being Christmas, sorry, but you will have to wait a few days before I can ask them about this.

'ello, Dolly,
In the 1851 census for Halifax, there are FOUR - ATKINSON families, all living at Turvin Mill, Blackstone Edge Road, Cragg Vale.
Joseph, with wife Ruth, and 1 child
Robert, with wife Sally, and 5 children
BUT...  TWO John's, both with wife Sarah !!
one has no children,
the other has 3 children, PLUS Mary, mother-in-Law.

If you would like to send me a personel message, with your e-mail address, I will scan a copy of this Census sheet direct to you.

This address is a few miles from Sowerby Bridge (may be 7 or 8) and it is almost on top of the Pennine Hills, very near the Yorkshire/Lancashire Border.

Regards,
Gordon.

'ello, Richard,

Do you want to try a "long-shot" ?  I have a Halifax Telephone Directory (actually - May 2002) which lists a R.A.Branscome, in Elland, would you like this telephone number to try ?

In fact, there are only 5 BRANSCOME's in the whole of the directory, all in the Elland/Greetland area, perhaps any or all of them could be descendants of your family. ??

Send me a personal reply and I will give you all this info.
OR, I will be in Halifax next Thursday, and can re-check in a 2006 directory.

Regards,
Gordon.

Glass Houghton is not very near Leeds, possibly 14/17 miles South East of Leeds.

It is just south of Castleford and north of Pontefract, near Junction 32 on the M62.

William Carter is still in Soyland in the 1841 census.

Ann,     age 68, born Yorks.
Samuel.  "    40 un.marr. Weaver, bn. Yorks

James,  age 82 and Ann, age 73 are at High Field Soyland, in the 1851 census, just a short distance from son William at Aufhole.

James CARTER married Ann MILNES, 20 Dec 1819 at Bradford.
William, son of James and Ann, was bapt. 22 Jul 1822 at Bradford.

Thanks, Dolly.
I don't know if I can help, but if John died in 1749, and Elizabeth became a widow, she must have married John before 1749.
Looking in my IGI, before 1749, I can only see the following possible marriages to a John RAMSDEN.
3 Jul 1738, at Elland, to Elizabeth FARRAR.
8 Aug 1733, at Illingworth, to Elizabeth NEWTON.
28 Nov 1723 at Elland, to Elizabeth SMITH, although this one seems a little too early.
So, perhaps Elizabeth FARRAR or NEWTON, but Rishworth residents, usually married at Elland.
