Yorkshire (West Riding) / Missing Great Grandfather - 1921 Census Help!!!!
« on: Friday 31 October 25 12:22 GMT (UK)  »
Morning All

It's been a few years since I posted my original request for help so thought I would give it another go.  Can anyone help or point me in the right direction to find my great grandfather on the 1921 census.

Here's what I know:

Walter Smith born 3/11/1893 in Birstall, Batley (Parents Thomas Dixon Smith and Elizabeth (Robinson).

Married Clara Porritt 28/7/1915 in Birstall, Batley (occupation grocer)

Lilian Smith born 30/11/1915 (my gran) in Heckmondwike (occupation grocer)

Walter was a witness at his sister Mary's wedding in Birstall 20/7/1916

Clifford Smith (son) born 13/4/1919 in Heckmondwike (occupation private in AOC)

Walter was conscripted in WW1 and was discharged 24/11/2019 - Army Ordnance Corps private 025537

The 1920 electoral roll shows both Walter and Clara at 36 Walkley Lane, Heckmondwike which is where Clara still is on the 1921 census.

On searching the 1921 census he is not with either his wife and children or his parents.  This does fit with the family story that when he returned from WW1 he didn't come back to his wife.

I have him on the 1939 register in Dewsbury with his new partner (Susannah Hoare) and son Jack (born 12/9/1936 in Dewsbury - occupation driver) so it would suggest he stayed fairly local.  He never divorced Clara so they couldn't marry.

My gran married her first husband 19/11/1938. Walter is named and occupation chauffeur.

Walter died in Leeds in 1962.

Realise this is a long shot with the name SMITH but any help or suggestions greatfully appreciated.

Evening All

Just received an Ancestry hint for my grandfather Charles Arthur Julian Dennington.  An article in the Sevenoaks Chronicle 3 January 1941 which i think may be his first marriage.

Would anyone be able to send me the article?  I dont have newspaper access at the moment as I'm too busy at work to make use of it but I'm intrigued to see what the article says.

Hi David
I hope you are still a member!!!
My computer had recently died and despite backing up recently I have still lost some images.
Back in 2012 you very kindly sent me a photo of my great grandmothers headstone and I wondered if you still have this image (long shot I know).
Regards
Helen

Hi Pauline

Thanks for your post.

He was a grocers assistant on his marriage certificate and by 1939 a driver

He is on the 1939 register with his new family but she was with her first husband on 1921 census

Thanks

Technical Help / Software Help
« on: Friday 27 November 20 19:20 GMT (UK)  »
Evening All
I have used Family Tree Maker 2005 for years on my old laptop with no issues.  It continued to work fine after the upgrade to Windows 10.
Just bought a new laptop, installed FTM from the disk and it wont work. The program opens but is unresponsive and freezes up.
Anyone come across this who can help?
Or can anyone recommend software which is similar and free (or cheap).
Thanks
