I'm still looking, thanks.

I haven't had an awful lot of time to devote to this at the moment.

Devon / Advice, please (Bideford)
« on: Sunday 28 November 04 00:35 GMT (UK)  »
I have a copy of the birth certificate of my husband's great nan, which gives her place of birth as "Whitehouse, Meddon St, Bideford".

I've searched the web to see if this address still exists, and I found that on Meddon St was the Workhouse.
The certificate clearly does not say Workhouse- I am sure that it is Whitehouse, but a website I found shows pics of the former workhouse, and it is a huge white building.

What do you all think? Is it likely that the place would have been referred to as "Whitehouse"?

Other little things do tie in, like her mother was unmarried, and in 1903 when the birth occured, there had been built a new infirmary as part of the building incorporating a labour ward.
Is it likely that as part of the workhouse it would have also been an unmarried mother's home?

What would you advise as a next step?

The Common Room / Re: Is this the same family? Opinions please!

I would think this is likely the same the same people.

I would assume that James sr died between 61/71.

You could prove this by looking for death entries on freebmd for James Webb between 61 and 71, or the marriage of Timothy Lyons to Jane (you may strike lucky and find she married under her widow surname not maiden- I've come across that before- or if you know her maiden name it's easier for you to look)

Good luck,
Tonia

Hi.
The 1891 census for Devon is online at Freecen.

I can't remember the url offhand, but run Freecen through google and it should bring up the site.

All the best,
Tonia.

Somerset Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Mariner/Death at Sea/Watchet.Somerset

Hi, a couple of things come to mind, firstly, I would have thought that deaths would still be in the civil registry, therefor there would have to be an entry in the bmd indices.
Secondly, I wonder if you might be able to look at (or if you do not live in the area, if someone could look for you) the RNLI stations in the area you are searching.
They always have boards around the station showing call-outs and casualties at sea.

Do you have his entry in 1881?
I don't have my discs to hand at the mo, but I'll check back in the morning and look him up if I have 2 minutes. There may be a clue as to which vessel he might of been on, or an idea as to the best place to look for him.

Good luck.

Devon Completed Lookup Requests / Richard Latham, 1841 census, poss Combe Martin
« on: Monday 15 November 04 16:17 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all.
Richard Latham was born 1775 in Combe Martin, and is there in both 1831 and 1851 censuses.
I only know of one child, Philip, born 1818.

Son Philip died 1842 in Combe Martin and his widow was living with Richard in 1851.
Can anyone supply info on Richard and/or Philip from 1841 census.

Thanks,

Tonia.

Hi, Jud.

1851 this is the only Mary Brooks born in Devon:

Head: BROOKS, Mary         Neighbors     37059
Name   Relationship   Mar   Age    Sex   Occupation    Birthplace
Mary  BROOKS   Head   W   55   F   Fishmonger   Kingskerswell-Dev
Joseph  HODGE   Son   U   20   M   Ag Lab   Kingskerswell-Dev
John  HODGE   Son   U   18   M   Ag Lab   Kingskerswell-Dev
George  HODGE   Son   U   15   M   Ag Lab   Kingskerswell-Dev
William  HODGE   Son   U   12   M   ---   Kingskerswell-Dev

Southernay House, Newton Abbot
Kingskerswell Newton Abbot, Devonshire
HO/107/1872 Folio:   57 Page:   22

I tried searching BROOKES, just in case and there are no Marys born in Devon.

I'm afraid it doesn't offer anything solid, unless you are able to verify any of the children, that is.

All the best,

Tonia
