Completed Census Requests / Re: 1861 Census Index Lookup Lancs
« on: Saturday 14 May 05 20:53 BST (UK)  »
Tom,

Many thanks for your help.  Since posting my message, I had located Thomas and Frances Heap and Charles Chadwick, and I think I've found the Samuel Slaughter in question outside Lancs.  But your response is useful in identifying James Slaughter, who is likely Frances (Slaughter) Heap's brother and another child of the Samuel Slaughter I was trying to locate.

Thanks again for your help!

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: 1841 & 1851 LANCASHIRE (Rochdale) HOLT

A quick note to let folks know that I FINALLY found my Holt/Shackleton family in the 1841 & 1851 census.  Thanks for all your help!

in case anyone is interested in this family, here's what I found:

1841 Census - Spotland, Rochdale
HO 107/551/5
Folio 18, page 28
Place: Holland St.:
William Holt, 35; trade: Woollen Spinner; born in same county: Y.
Elizabeth, 35; born in same county: Y.
John, 15; trade: Doffer; born in same county: Y.
William, 10; born in same county: Y.
Mary, 14; trade: Piecer; born in same county: Y.
Sarah Shacleton [sic], 15; trade: Do [Piecer]; born in same county: Y.
Jane, 14; trade: Nurse; born in same county: Y.
Elizabeth, 12; trade: Piecer; born in same county: Y.
[Their household is immediately followed by that of Hannah Jennings, the widow of Elizabeth Jennings Shackleton Holt's brother Thomas.  Two young Holt children are listed in the Jennings's household, but it is not clear how or whether they are related to William Holt.]

1851 Census - Village of Shawclough, Spotland, Rochdale
HO107; Piece: 2245
Folio 478, p. 22
Schedule: 72; Name of Street, Place or Road: Shaw Clough:
William Holt, Head, Mar, 48, occupation: Agent of Woolen Mill; born: Lancashire, Manchester.
Elizth., Wife, Mar, 47, no occupation listed; born: Yorkshire, UK [unknown].
Sarah Shacleton [sic], Daur, U, 27, occupation: Power Weaver Woolen; born: Lancashire, Rochdale.
Jane, Daur, U, 23, occupation: Power Weaver Woolen; born: Lancashire, Manchester.
Elizabeth, Daur, U, 21, occupation: Power Weaver Woolen; born: Lancashire, Rochdale.
William Holt, Lodger, U, 20, occupation: Power Weaver Woolen; born: Lancashire, Rochdale.  [This man is almost certainly not a lodger but William Holt's son by his first wife.]
Martha Buckley, Lodger, U, 20 occupation: Power Weaver Woolen; born: Lancashire, Rochdale.

Thanks again for all your help!

Norfolk / Re: Norfolk Place Name - Holley? Obley?
« on: Monday 28 February 05 17:34 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks to all of you for your help.  I think that Brian may have hit the nail on the head.  Frances (Slaughter) Heap must have been born in Alby.

I checked the IGI on familysearch.org for possible matches for the family listed in the 1841 census above.  As one might have expected Samuel Slaughter/Slater and Willoughby Clarke had two sons named Samuel (presumably the first died young), who were christened in Ingworth, Norfolk:  the first, Samuel Clark Slaughter, on 7 June 1799; and the second, Samuel Slaughter, on 5 October 1801.  This could well be Frances (Slaughter) Heap's father, although he would have been a bit on the young side.  In fact, I'd be more inclined to say that Frances's parents were likely Samuel Slaughter and Ann Peart, who married 20 April 1811, Aylsham.

However, it is interesting that the John and Ann Slaughter listed above in the 1841 census (who are apparently the son and daughter of Samuel and Willoughby (Clarke) Slaughter) also apparently had a daughter named Frances, who was born 8 June 1820 and christened 11 June 1820 in Alby (about the same time the Frances (Slaughter) Heap was probably born).

So, although the parentage of Frances (Slaughter) Heap appears to be a bit of a mystery, I think it's likely that she was born in Alby.

Thanks again for all your help!

I, too, have wondered if the place in question might be Alby, but am providing some additional information as requested to see if someone might be able to help me figure this out.

The person whose birthplace is in question is Frances (Slaughter) Heap, the daughter of Samuel Slaughter (a soldier, according to her marriage record), who was born in Norfolk about 1820.

Frances Slaughter of Oldham Road, Rochdale, married Thomas Heap, also of Oldham Road, on 25 December 1848, St. Chad's, Rochdale, Lancashire.

The couple, their two-year-old daughter Mary, and a 10-month-old visitor (almost certainly a niece), Alice J. Slaughter, are listed in the 1851 census on Hamer Mill Road, Wuerdle & Wardle, Rochdale, Lancashire.  (Schedule No. 41, p. 11, folio 428, piece 2246, HO 107.)  This census entry lists Frances's birthplace as "Norfolk, Obley [Olley? Olbey?]"

The 1871 census lists Thomas and Franes [sic] Heap on Martin Row, Rishworth, Halifax, Yorkshire.  (Schedule No. 106, p. 25, folio 70, piece 4409, RG 10.)  This entry fairly clearly lists Frances's birthplace as "Holley Nr Norwich," although I can identify no such place in the list of Norfolk parishes and/or registration districts.

Since Frances was not living in Norfolk, I would not be at all surprised if the name or spelling of her birthplace was written or pronounced incorrectly by her and/or the census enumerator.  Still I would be very grateful if anyone could help me figure out where she might have been born.

I have a copy of the 1851 census entry in djvu format, which cannot be posted to this website, and a copy of the 1871 census entry in gif format, which is too large to post.  I would be happy, however, to send them by email to anyone who would be willing to look at the actual entries to see whether s/he can make out the place of birth.  Thanks again for your assistance!

Norfolk / Norfolk Place Name - Holley? Obley?
« on: Thursday 24 February 05 22:51 GMT (UK)  »
While doing some research with the 1851 and 1871 census for Lancashire, I have come upon a Norfolk birthplace that I cannot identify.  The 1851 census lists the birthplace as Norfolk, Obley (or Olley or Holey).  The 1871 census lists the same woman's birthplace as "Holley nr Norwich."

I am completely unfamiliar with Norfolk.  Can anyone tell me what town or village is referenced here and where it is located?

Thanks!

Lancashire / 1841 Lancashire Census CDs
« on: Tuesday 17 August 04 19:59 BST (UK)  »
I have a question about the quality of images on CD sets for the 1841 Lancashire Census.  In particular, I'm interested in hearing from anyone who may own the set produced by S & N British Data Archive.

I bought the set produced by Stepping Stones Data and have been disappointed to find that large chunks of the census (much of Castleton in Rochdale, for instance) are largely unreadable.  I know that this is due largely to the fact that many of the images on microfilm are quite faded (and I assume the original is too).  But I would be curious to hear whether the images have been enhanced on the S & N set.  (I own the S & N set for 1861 and it's excellent!)

Has anyone used the 1841 Lancashire Census from S & N?

If someone has access to the 1841 or 1851 census for Lancashire, I would appreciate a look up of the following family, who were living on Richard Street, Rochdale (which I believe is located in Castleton) in April 1848:

William Holt, 38/48, b: Manchester; spinner or small ware dealer.
Betty/Betsy/Elizabeth Holt, 39/49, b: London

Possible children in this household include:
John H. Holt, 15/25, b: Rochdale
Mary Holt, 15/25, b: Rochdale (She married to Samuel Goddard in 1848.)
William Holt, 10/20, b: Rochdale
Jane Shackleton, 12/22, b: Manchester
Elizabeth Shackleton, 11/21, b: Rochdale.

Many thanks!

Galena

I managed to locate Deborah Taylor and her family, as well as Deborah’s husband-to-be, William McNutt who is enumerated immediately before the Taylor family.  But no luck on Andrew McNutt.  I skimmed through all of Darwen, pieces 3108-3111, but didn’t see him anywhere.  It’s entirely possible that I missed him somewhere, but…

If you have a particular street or region within Over Darwen that you’d like me to check again, let me know.  In the meantime, I hope this is useful.
