Hi Beverley,

I saw your request in the Ripley and Heanor News on Friday last (I was reading someone elses paper so I hope I've remembered everything) and have been having a look round. Swallownest is about 25 miles north of Ripley and is situated in South Yorkshire to the east of Sheffield. Quite a lot of people from the Ripley area ended up in the area mainly in the mining industry. You may already have this information but in the 1901 census Henry and Hannah were in the Parish of Aston with Aughton (or Aston cum Aughton) which may cover Swallownest. Henry is described as a miner, aged 48, born Nottingham, Hannah, 47, shown born Derby, but this could be a transcription error. Children appear to be Alice, aged 15, born Waingroves, James aged 9, born Swallownest, and Jemima aged 13, also born Waingroves, a village near to Ripley.

There were members of the Whysall family living at Aston in 1901 and I suspect the one mentioned in the obit, G Whysall is one German Whysall. The Cresswells and Walters families abound in the Ripley/Heanor areas as do the Whysalls and I have connections through marriage recorded to my mothers family, the Hardys, at Heanor. I haven't yet established a link with yours but I'll keep looking. I hope this little bit helps. I live at Alfreton in Derbyshire, only about 3 miles from Ripley, so if you think I can help don't hesitate to ask. I can be contacted direct on (*)

Best wishes

John Rayson
