Sorry I cannot give you any more information than I have already given you.  It was some years ago that I downloaded the tree and there is no indication on it as to the website from where it came.

I have studied the Drummond family tree again and I can provide further information from it:

The William Gott who married Mary Bee on 28th June 1803, mentioned in an earlier posting, was the son of Esther Drummond and William Gott.   William and Esther are shown as having 2 children - Elizabeth born ? and William born 1780.

The marriage of William Gott and Mary Bee resulted in 8 children - Isabel b ?, William b 15 Oct 1809, Elizabeth b 18 Oct 1811, John b 1814, James b 1815, Mary b 1819, Esther b 17 Dec 1821 and Dorothy b 28 Oct 1823.

Esther Drummond's second marriage to John Dobbs produced one child - also called John.

There is no indication on the tree as to who William Gotts parents were.

Whereas Arthur Appleton's book only seems to mention James Drummond and Elizabeth Armstrong as having 3 children, the tree shows 7 children.

My gr gr grandmother was Alice Drummond who was b 1808 at Lamesley, however I have been any connection back to James Drummond of Biddick.

Some years ago I found a quite large family tree of Drummonds who descended from James Drummond and Margaret Armstrong.  This gives the marriage of Esther Drummond and William Drott as 30th July 1778 and also shows a son - William Gott, born in 1780 who married Mary Bee on 28th June 1803.

As far as I can see from the tree, which is on 12 A4 sheets, there is a later marriage of Esther Drummond to John Dodds on 24th April 1785.

I have the book 'The Mystery of the Duke of Perth, A Historical Enigma' by Arthur Appleton, however I have been unable to find any reference to Esther Drummond, it only mentions the birth of Anne in 1750, James in 1752 and Elizabeth in 1764.

Durham Completed Look up Requests / Re: John and Mary Jane Watson, Tow Law.

My thanks for both replies which have been most helpful.

I searched on FreeBMD as suggested as suggested in the first reply and found both references that have been suggested to me in the second reply.

The death certificates should provide me with further information, particularly for Mary Jane as her death occurred in the same quarter as the birth of their daughter Elizabeth.

Durham Completed Look up Requests / John and Mary Jane Watson, Tow Law.
« on: Friday 07 October 16 12:26 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for the death/burial for 2 of my great grandparents - John Watson, born in 1829 at Rookhope, Co Durham and Mary Jane (Collinson) Watson who was born in 1835 at Wolsingham, Co Durham.

Mary Jane gave birth to a daughter, Elizabeth, in 1875 at Tow Law but she does not appear on the 1881 Census so she must have died at some time between 1875 and 1881.

John Watson and his daughter Elizabeth are on the 1911 Census for Tow Law so his death must be some time after that.

Any help will be much appreciated.

I have checked all my earlier information together with the reply information that I have received in these postings and I am now satisfied that the marriage of William Messenger and Mary Machin at Arksey is the correct one for my tree.

I am most grateful for all the postings that I have received on this thread.

I am very grateful for the reply postings on this thread and I was hoping that I had found information to allow me to work back another generation.

Having looked closely I now feel that the William Messenger who married Mary Machin on 23 Jun 1794 at Arksey, Doncaster is not in my line of Messengers.  The William that I had identified was born on 14 Sep 1763 at Swalcliffe, Oxfordshire.

However identifying this William is dependant upon his son, Benjamin, being the correct Benjamin and I probably need to do some more work to confirm that this is correct.  If I make a further query then this will be more appropriate on the RootsChat Durham board.

This part of my tree has been causing problems for some time now and I really thought that I may have sorted it out but it appears that I have not done so, however many thanks for all the reply postings.

Thanks for all the postings to my query.

The information that I have for my 3x gr grandfather is :
"From the BTs for Chester le Street.
Benjamin Messenger born 23 May 1805 Lumley Park, Co Durham.  2nd son of William Messenger of Lumley Park, Whipperin, native of Swalcliffe, Oxfordshire, by his wife Mary Magin, native of Hawkshaw, Yorkshire"

From Family Search :
"William Messenger = Mary married 18th December 1803 at Kilham, York."

In the BTs for Chester le Street for their daughter and son the name is spelt as 'Maychin' and 'Magin' and rightly or wrongly I have interpreted this as 'Machin'.

The mention of Benjamin being the 2nd son now leads me to the idea that the William Messenger b 12 May 1798 and identified by Suzard is probably the correct one

I have to admit that the thought that I may have skipped a generation had not occurred to me and I obviously need to do some more work on that one.

My 4x gr grandfather, William Messenger, married Mary Machin on 18th December 1803 at Kilham, Yorkshire.

I am looking for the parents of Mary Machin and also for her birth/baptism dates and if anyone can help I would be extremely grateful.
