Somerset / Re: Norton St Philip
« on: Wednesday 14 May 25 20:52 BST (UK)  »
I have ancestors buried in the churchyard at Norton St Philip.  Is there anyone with an interest in Norton St Philip who can assist me with my research?
I live about 15 / 20 minutes away from NSP, and I'm planning a trip at some stage to do a walk! I'd be happy to have a look around the graveyard (I've driven past the church hundreds of times, but I've no idea how feasible this is, as I'm not sure of the size) to see if I can find any Grists.  :)

As a caveat, I'm currently out of action, as I stupidly tripped over in Bristol recently and have hurt my knee, so it may be a few weeks before I can look. If you'd like me to, please send me a PM.  I'm a very sporadic visitor to the site these days, but I'll make sure to check back for the next week to see if you've seen my post.

If you look at the second paragraph of this link there is a mention of the location of the "local Liberal club".

You may have seen it before, of course.  :)

Somerset Lookup Requests / Re: East Lydford church

Hi Matthew.  I live about half an hour away from East Lydford, and whilst I don't go past it often, I would be happy to take some snaps from you if nobody else is able to - it might not be until next spring though!

However, a potential problem... you don't say which church it is.   According to Wikipedia (look up Lydford-on-the-Fosse) the church of St Mary's at East Lydford was last used in 1987 and has been privately owned since 1993.  Is this the church you mean, or is there another?

That's interesting - thank you. :)

Can anybody help to identify the uniform in this photo please?

Also, I'm trying to see if I can date it.  I realise this is practically impossible but I thought it was worth a shot. :)

Thanks in advance.  :)

ETA:  I'll see if I can capture the badge a little larger.

ETA Again!

No problem.  :)

If I'm ever in that neck of the woods again I'll see if the church is open.  The porch was unlocked so we thought we'd be okay... but the inner door was locked.   Shame.

I bet you thought I'd forgotten about this thread.

I'm afraid I don't have any news for you.  My husband and I went to Yeovil today so we called in at Odcombe on the way home - but sadly the church was locked.  :(    There is no contact information on 'A Church Near You' and the church doesn't seem to have a website.

I took a picture of the outside for you, but it's not the same, I know.

You may already have seen it, but there is a memorial to this event in St John's Church, Midsomer Norton.  I'm not sure if I am allowed to link to Wikipedia on here, but if you go to Wikipedia and type in Somerset Coalfield you should find it.  :)
