Thanks Ambly,
That was very helpful. Also knowing about a possible elder brother - I knew he had a sister, but not a brother. Cheers, Pepinou.

Thanks for the blueyonder link to Scottish ministers. It told me the details I needed to know about Reverend Hamilton Paul.

This is all fascinating. My great grandfather Lewis Henry Smith came over from Detroit, USA, WITH Singer Sewing machines, when the factory was opened. He and his wife and five daughters lived in Helensburgh.

I was born in Helensburgh in 1934 - I can remember air raids, although H'burgh was not greatly affected by dropped bombs - only one fell off the pier - but the noise was horrendous, all the time, and we could see Clydebank, Greenock, all the shipyards, burning.

Ayrshire / Reverend Hamilton Paul
« on: Saturday 04 April 09 11:34 BST (UK)  »
Reverend Hamilton Paul was born in Dailly, around 1773. He died in 1854, in Peebleshire, where he was the minister of three parishes, Glenholme, Broughton, and Kilbucho. I cannot find out whether he was married, married with children, or remained single. He was editor of the Ayr Advertiser until 1816, and helped set up the first Burn's suppers, so may have been a friend of the poet. Can anyone help, please?

Dunbartonshire / Clydebank newspapers

I am trying to find a photograph of my grandfather Robert Whyte who was employed by John Brown's shipyard as an architect/designer. He worked on both the original Queens, HMS Vanguard and the first Caronia. I cannot find a photo of him amongst the family papers, and I thought perhaps a newspaper in Clydebank ( before 1949) might have one. Help needed please!

Unable to help I regret to say. but thanks for giving me an hour of interest. My paternal grandmother came from Ayrshire - my father was born in 1896, and I imagine that photograph is Edwardian?

Have you tried big houses that have been turned into schools? A great many were in those days as the owners could not afford the upkeep.

My great grandfather was called John Gilmour Whyte, and I believe his mother;s maiden name was Gilmour.
His son, my grandfather was born in 1875, in Helensburgh. I am researching this family now, although I am new at the game! The Scottish side of my family have always had a connection with Ayrshire.
Hope this is of interest.

Scotland / Re: Does anyone know what does "Aird" mean?

My father spoke gaelic, and he told me once that "aird" or "ard " meant "at the mound of".
