I wondered if i might be on a bit of a wild goose chase hoping for a birth registration record.  on the marriage cert it just says father George labourer, the family story is that George ran a bakery at Addington St Ramsgate and sold it to go to America but when the family had to return he committed suicide all this needs to be verified at some point.  Norah's daughter Maria was indeed born in the workhouse do you know of any workhouse records on line?  otherwise i will try and visit the archives.  there are 2 witnesses at Norah's wedding to James Tapley so that angle might be worth pursuing.  Many thanks for checking the indexes for me, i appreciate your advice and will try and follow a few things up that you suggest.

My husbands gt gt grandmother Norah Philpott was reportedly born in a boat in New York Harbour in 1853, the story is that the family were hoping to emigrate to the USA.  Apparently her family's papers were not in order so they had to return to England, Kent we think.  Norah eventually settled in Ramsgate Kent but was in London as a young single woman.  Her census records all state that she was born in New York.  Her fathers' name was George (obtained from Norah's marriage certificate).  i would appreciate any advice on whether it would be possible to obtain a birth record for her and how to set about it.
Thanks Carol

Completed Census Requests / Re: Wileman Measham, Derbys (Leics)1819

Hi Debbie, thanks very much for the info, i had come across them before and im fairly sure that Wm and Susannah are my direct ancestors (grandparents x 4), have looked on the original 1841 census and it reads 60yrs of age on there which helps to confirm it.  Think in 1851 that the old William with Benjamin and Elizabeth is the same William as the one in 1841  as Susannah died in 1848 and think Elizabeth is his daughter tho i notice Williams occupation appears to have changed.  i know for sure that my william was a weaver at some point.  if you have any connections with these families please let me know.  best wishes carol

Thanks Omskirk and John for that most interesting information.

Omskirk - if you are a brampton man i may pick your brains for further info in due course.  as a number of my distant and recent ancestors lived there.
Best wishes Carol

dont understand this, most people seem young in the pics, i thought family history was an older persons hobby (im in between age wise, but im one of the 'youngsters' at my local family history meetings, good for the ego) but think i'll keep a low profile on rootsweb, cant keep up with the competition!

you may want to get someone else to do the look up in the meantime.

I intend on persevering as i want some info myself.
