Robert Garden, my great-grandfather, had a shop in Bridge Street, but he was married to Margaret Jolly. I wonder if Bob Garden is the son of my great-uncle William Garden who married Barbara Sinclair as he had a son Robert. William married again after Barbara died.

Hi Swally
Were the grandparents of your James Allan, James Allan and Isobel Cruickshank (married Rayne, Aberdeen 29/6/1793). They had about 5 children (Elisabeth, Isobel, Jean, Robert, William). Elisabeth is my gr gr grandmother.  Chapel Garioch is in Rayne, and I see that some of the Allan chn were christened there. Perhaps your James was a child of William's?

I am trying to trace what happened to Robert Allan (brother of my great great grandmother Barbara Allan). Robert was born in Rayne, Aberdeen, to James Allan and Isobel Cruickshank (sometimes Isabella on censuses) on 3/9/11804. Other children were William (b. 1793); Elisabeth (b. 1796); Isobel (b. 1798); Jean (b. 1802). I have not been able to find Barbara's birth certificate but she was born c. 1811/1812 according to other documents.
I have Robert and his mother on the 1841 census, and the on the 1851 he is married to a Jean Allan (b. Cavish) and they have 4 children (Robert, George, Isabella, William). In the adjoining dwelling is his mother Isabella [sic] and also Barbara and her (illegitimate) son Robert Garden - my great grandfather (his father was a John Garden). Robert went to Orkney where he became a famous and wealthy trader and introduced floating ships. Barbara followed him there ... but I have not been able to trace her brother after 1851, or what happened to their parents Isabel and James. (Presume James must have died prior to 1841). Any pointers or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Mary Garden

Robert Garden was illegitimate: his birth certificate says "born in uncleanness". However when his mother, Barbara Allan, moved to Orkney to join him (after he had begun his business) she pretended she was the widow of John Garden. This is also on Barbara's death certificate and Robert's marriage certificate to Margaret Jolly. However, John Garden (while he is there on Robert's birth certificate) married a Jean Lyons a few years later and they had one child. John died in the River Denburn in 1857. They had one son, and I've located a descendant living in Canada. That the John Garden's are one and the same, has been verified from several sources, including the witness at the christening of Robert Garden etc etc.

Robert Garden is a household name in the Orkneys and at the time of his death was known as the Merchant Prince of Orkney for his floating shops (ships) that serviced the Orkney Islands and north Scotland and his commercial trading. He had very little schooling and was a cattle boy for a few years, and then a slater etc. Quite a bit has been written about his rise from terrible poverty to immense wealth. (None of it filtered down to my family!). My grandfather was the eldest son, but was disinherited from the business sides of things. He ended up moving to New Zealand and cutting himself off from the Garden family. Long story.

If anyone is interested in the Garden tree let me know ... and any more info

Robert Garden senior was my great grandfather. He was the illegitimate son of Barbara Allan and Robert Garden (I ordered the birth certificate!). He was born in Rayne, Aberdeen. I've done lots of research on this as I'm writing a book on my father, Oscar Garden, who became a pioneer aviator. I have also written a long article on Robert Garden and his commercial trading empire (including the floating shops) and this will soon be published in Scotland's Northern Times.
If you email me I can send you more info and the family tree ...
